background image help (unsolved)

heyya im almost new to blender, never yet posted. and im having problems with the background image inserting (im following a tutorial)

i click view -> background image
then when the window comes up click use background image.
find my jpg and click select image

nothing happens?

the tutorial doesnt give detail so i assumed it would just come up in object or edit mode?

have i forgotten to do anything? or what am i doing wrong? any suggestions?

The background image is only visable when you are in top, front or side view which are on numberpad keys 7,1 & 3

the compatability thing, the features are probably just named something different on one program to the other, you’ll probably have to save a non subsurfed version and get your freind to apply the equivalent to subsurf in his software .
