when I use a background image blender becomes incredibly laggy for me. Does this happen to everyone or is there something I can do to fix this?
Probably, yes!
Don’t use “gigantic” images, and if possible in a power of two size, ex: 512x512
1024x1024, 512x1024
my image is only 547 x 329. I’ve used bigger ones before and I seam to get a lot of lag with all sizes.
How much RAM / CPU do you have? I use huge Background images all the time.
Better yet, what kind of video card do you posses?
I dont think it happens to everyone!
There must be something with the GC I’d say…
What format do you use as background ?
I have a pentium 4, 2.8 GHz 766 Mb of ram and a crappy Intel extreme graphics card.
The pictures I use have all been jpeg’s.
The thing is I can run about 2.5 million vertices’s in edit mode on the screen at once before it gets as laggy as it is with just a background image. I would think displaying a background image would take a lot less possessing power then it would to display 2.5 million vertices’s.
I’ve noticed some lag occaisionally when I use enormous background images, annoying enough to resize them and reload the smaller image. My creaky old desktop only has 256Meg RAM, though. I’ve also noticed if I don’t give it enough time when working with the UV image editor, sometimes it won’t load an image. It will say the image is there, but nothing shows up. I repeat the process, allowing more time before I do anything else, and it works fine.
I wouldn’t call the image size you’re talking about particularly large, though. I’m talking about images in the 2000 by 3000 range.
Someone, I forgot who now has submitted a patch to fix a problem with using background images, but so far it did not get integrated into Blender2.45.
go down to ebay and buy a video card for $30-$50. It will turn circles around your intel built in. (or buy new)
lol, I am I just haven’t gotten around to it yet. But I would still like to fix the problem.
Anyone know where I can find this patch that gat is talking about?
I don’t have much lag, but I do have 3 gigs of ram and a monster video card, so I guess I wouldn’t. But I agree with the first post, and would add that you could aslo turn yje image black and white, and save it as a low quality jpg. It’s just a reference anyway.
