Bad looking polys

I never used to have this problem, but I took a break from blender for a while, and now everytime I model I have to scrap the project and start over because the polys look… bad:

Only happens when I hit smooth. Thats something I worked on for about 5 minutes…

And yeah, I have tried to flip normals and whatnot… it’s just getting annoying because I never used to have this kind of problem.

What happens if you add the Edgesplit modifier to one of the models that look bad?

Ok, now I have another problem: I just upgraded my blender version, in hopes that it would fix this problem… however, my UV Mapped background image is solid pink! How can I UV Map my picture back, the options seem different…

And, Ill try the edgesplit modifier in a few minutes…

EDIT: Sweet, Edgesplit seemed to work!

Ok, so what is Edgesplit? I’ve never seen this before? And I still am having trouble UV Mapping my background image…

Edge split basically splits off faces from the mesh if they are above a certain angle. This way flat surfaces don’t get smoothed. This takes care of those funky black wavy surfaces from plain smoothing. I hope that made sense, if not check the wiki it is explained better there.

As for the pink UV map, I think blender does that when it can’t find your texture. In 2.46, UV face select mode is gone, it is now rolled into Edit mode. Go into Edit, select your Faces and you should then be able to select the image you want using the UV / Image editor.

Yeah, ok, I got it. Well, the .blend I was working on was from an older version of blender, the .jpg didn’t move, but I guess since the face select is gone blender didn’t read it right. I got it now.

Thanks for all of your help!
