Bake from view

I’ve been quite impressed with the results of “unwrap to view” which a lot of people have used to quickly add textures to their blend-to-life WIPs.

Is there a way that I could, say, UV unwrap a character in my usual method (physically make seams and arrange the islands to best fit in UV editor) and then use the “to view” method to bake image textures onto that layout, so I could save the layout image before rotating my 3D view to capture other areas?

…and thus, have the whole model photo-mapped very quickly (put the various parts I like together again in Gimp as one UV image) to suit my original UV layout?

Thanks. A detailed tutorial that does look like what I’m asking. Will be good to work through this.
