bake-problem with UVs on multi material mesh

hy blenderheads,
im from germany and since 1 year on learning blender - this is my first Post
excuse my little bad english :cool:

i work on the character “captain blender” from the blenderbook “Introducing Character Animation with Blender”

i use blender 2.49 on windows

i ran into a Problems with overlapping UV´s when BAKE AO for more than 1 part of the mesh :eek:
…i try to describe…

ive got a char out of one mesh with 3 Materials

mat1 - HEAD skin
mat2 - SUIT
mat3 - SHOES plastic

SKIN creation for the head.

  • ive UV-unwarpped the head (with good seams)
    to fill a whole 4000x4000 Picture

  • then select only the heads Vertices in 3D-View

  • open UV/Image-Editor - ADD new (empty) pic

  • goto RENDER - BAKE - and bake AO

THIS FIRST TIME EVERYTHING WORKS !!
blender bakes the AO to the pic in the editor for just the head as i had expected
then it stops

------ 2nd part

SUIT creation for body (on the same mesh)

  • i UV-unwarped the suit´s vertices with seams
    to fill a whole 4000x4000 Picture again

  • then select only the suits Vertices in 3D-View

  • open UV/Image-Editor - ADD new (empty) pic
    here occoured my first problem:
    when i add a pic it dosnt show up in editor
    the acctual pic hangs there - i cant change the pic in the editor
    when i pin the acctual pic to the editor i can change pics :no: ohh whats that ?
    so i do this (unlogical) and select the empty pic i created earlyer

  • goto RENDER - BAKE - and bake AO - let it run

THIS TIME Blender BAKES other parts of the mesh NOT THE SUIT
seems like blender do it evertime i try in a differnet order
it mostly starts with the suit or head and then jump to another part while baking
or another time it bakes the head and stops - but never the suit

i dont understand that and never experienced something similar chaotic

MY QUESTIONS - but it seems to be another problem
do i have to mark edges between the different MAT as seams maybe ?

or do i have to avoid overlapping UVs on the same mesh even with differnet Materials ?

or do i have to use more then one UV-Tex-Layer ?

have all UVs to be on one pic ?

PLEASE HELP :eek: i realy cant figure out whats wrong here
