Baking hair to mesh WITHOUT converting it to a mesh?

Hi, I was in desperate need of a way to bake my fur onto a mesh, without converting the fur into a mesh itself, as this results in FAR too high a polycount. (Since I intend to use these as game textures, I would need them to look good up close, so the hair count is quite high)
I’d be extremely grateful if someone could help me, as I’d rather not learn Maya just so I can do this one thing…
