Baking normals won't work

Hey, everyone I am trying to bake the normals from a high poly sculpted head to a low poly head and can’t get it to work. I applied the multires on the high poly model and then clicked it before clicking the low poly head. I chose bake “normals”, normal space “tangent”, and “selected to active”. However, when I bake it takes about one second and makes a normal map that has no detail on it. Can anyone help me?

I tried to upload my .blend but it didn’t work for some reason

Thanks

Your low poly mesh needs a UV map for it and it should be selected in the UV/Image editor window.

Yes it has a UV map and it it is selected. Here are some pictures. In one the heads are not in the same position. This is just to show the difference in detail between high and low poly. As you can see the generated normal map looks like it has no detail

The low poly also won’t render. It has a material and I added a light and camera to the scene. But the render comes out completely white. I don’t know if this has anything to do with it

As for the normals, you might want to look at the “Distance” field in the “Bake” section as well as the Bias. I know with the Distance field, if your low poly mesh is farther than that distance, it won’t bake any details. 0.10 of a blender unit means that your low poly mesh basically has to be “perfectly” aligned with the high poly mesh. I would try a value of 10 and go down from there or 1 and go up.

As for the render, is the entire render white or just the mesh? If it’s just the mesh, more than likely you haven’t assigned an image to it in the UV/Image editor. In the UV/Image editor (when the low poly mesh is selected and all of the faces are selected as well, you need to select the image to actually display on the model). For some reason, Blender doesn’t automatically use the image that’s assigned in your material, assuming you have an actual image assigned to it versus a procedural texture.

If you can post a link to the blend file with the image packed in it already, I and others, might be able to help out a bit faster?

Hmmm I messed around a little with those settings and still didn’t get it. I have never uploaded a .blend file to an external website so I hope this works. Here is the link http://www.gigasize.com/get/3o1vywwxfrf. I forgot to pack the images but just bake it and you will see what i mean. The bake only takes about two seconds. Thanks again

That is a truly horrible upload site: it took me three attempts (including two capchas, a couple of minutes wait and at least one misleading advertising link) to get the file.

Anyway, the main problem is that you have disabled rendering for the high-poly mesh: you can’t bake from something that isn’t being rendered. Turn it back on, and all is well:

Best wishes,
Matthew

ACK! I finally figured it out and MCollet sneaks in with the answer. I have to agree that the site was a pain to get the file. I don’t ever disable the rendering for an item, which is why I didn’t look for it.

Well, you got your answer. Good luck.

use http://pasteall.org/ for your code, blend & pic files upload.

Ok great! Thank you so much for the help everybody! Im sorry about the upload site. I will be sure to use pasteall.
