Barn Image from 3dluvr Contest

Voting is closed, so I guess I can show this now.

Modelled and rendered entirely in Blender. Tiny bit of glow and grain in Photoshop.

You can click here to see some wireframes and read a tiny bit about the image, if you’re interested.

You can click here for the 1024x768 master image, jpegged nicely to 235k.

I learned some very cool texturing and lighting tricks while making this, and I’ll cook up a tutorial if anyone is interested.

Edit: 8th Place :-? I’ll have to try harder next time. First and Second place images are incredible. The other ones… eh… But check out one and two at http://contest.3dluvr.com/archive.php.

Very! That’s a real nice image, I’m definately impressed.

Wow. I’ve been interested to see this since you posted in the Chat forum about it. I can see it lives up to the hype :). Well done! I love the attention to detail - the shadow coming off the farmer/ladder is great.

:o you rock.

you said somerthing about a tutorial…are you going to write a tutorial on how to make the WHOLE composition? i know I for one would love that…it’s GREAT!. one thing bothering me: what lighting setup did you use? Did you paint your own textures or what? How long did it take to complete? And how did u get that nice varied grass on the ground?

and now, for the only crit: it all seems small, and i think it’s because of the dof in the lower part of the picture. anyway, good job

great harkyman !

I like the way you use DOF in the forground,
near to the left of the camera

HEY! I guessed right! As I said in your thread in Elysiun Chat, this one stood out fo rme over all of the other entries. It was different than the others.

Great stuff. Don’t feel bad about 8th place either. That is pretty damned good out of the entries that were there.

BgDM

Congratulations for your 8. place!

hey thats not fair

they list the 3d applications used to make the pics.

they list
maya
3d max
cinema 4d

BUT NOT BLENDER

they call it other!!!

how rude!!!

but a very good position 8th is great

Wow,

very nice pic!

Stefano

Beautiful
You’ve managed to get rid of alot of the “rendered” feeling that is so often overpowering in 3d art.
After looking at it for awhile it struck me as a little strange to oil the wall from the bottom up. Hmm… maybe he’s painting it white, but to me it looks alot like he’s oiling dried wood.

  1. pofo

umm…actually, i think the idea was to paint the wall white…that’s how it struck me from the first time i saw it…

Yeah, I guessed right too. I only looked at all the Barn pictures and I thought (honest!) that this one was the best. The people in the other compositions were too much in the foreground and obviously modeled. Your guy is small enough to be ‘real’
OK, I’m of to look at the first 7. (Maybe they’re mostly tractor ones…)

Congratulations with your 8th place. Nothing to feel bad about! (It sure beats my ‘ball hovering over square’ pictures  )

This is a pefect example of a truly excellent artist at work.

Harkyman could have used the most expensive app on the market today, but he didn’t need to. Why? Because his vision and abilities minimized the importance of the Blender’s role. With that said, we all know how powerful Blender can be in capable hands.

There were some poor entires in the contest and they used commercial apps with all the ‘latest’ features. But that didn’t make up for poor planning, poor vision, or lack of ability on those artist’s part.

Harky took his vision and made Blender ‘render his imagination’ or in this case his interpretation of an actual location in PA. Just look at the picture, you can see the attention to detail all the way through.

I really like this piece. Excellent job. I think your work was top 3 easily, if not the best entry overall.

congrats, harkyman!!
excellent piece of art, really stunning look :o
.andy

Great work, very nice to look at!!!

I hope no one minds, especially harky, but i wrote them a comment about listing Blender as “other”. That kind of ticked me off, considering it was the ONLY one listed as other, it would have been just as easy to write Blender, dontchathink???

Anywayz, loved the pic and look forward to seeing more of your work, and possibly the tute you spoke about writting!!!

Matt

Blend on, and blend well!!!

HAHA!!!

Just decided to check back on this, and they DID change to “Blender” from “Other”. Good on them!!! I wonder if it was the comment i sent them… or possibly the multitude of comments they got from us (dont know if anyone else commented).

Matt

Blend on, and blend well!!!

Thanks for the good vibrations, everyone.

adyus: the barest of explications is on my website.

BgDM, UglyMike: Good guess.

Pofo:He’s painting it white.

ec2: Thanks and thanks. I kinda half made this picture to push Blender’s renderer and texturing system. I suspect that you and I may be of the same mind on this.

Bapsis: Ha! What’d you threaten them with? I wonder if “Blender” will be an option in the future? Hope so.

hello harkyman.
I voted your picture for number two, even though I did not know it was yours. interetingly, I don’t think any of my selections made top 3 :-?
the one that came in number 4 I voted for number 1 slot.
In general, the ratings seem kinda dissapointing. a lot of the pictures look like each other, or are direct attempts to look like paintings, or like aged photographs. yours was one of the few that stood out. The lighting, colors and textures are just excellent. really good, crisp work.
some of the higher grossing images (I’m not going to say which ones) look good in the thumbnails but terrible in the full sized image. I’m guessing quite a few people who voted didn’t even look at all the images full size (it was pretty painful to wait even on broadband, for me)

You did a terrific job!
