Basic Q: How to manipulate vertices in blender?

I’m using blender 2.74 and using Lynda.com to learn the program. In a tutorial it teaches you how to make a simple character, but the instructor says to “middle click on the vertices” to shape it. My mouse (typical three button, left; scroll/click; right) won’t select when i click using the middle buttonscroll wheel. When I right select the vertex it warps the character instead of just re-positioning the lines. What gives? I’m also using a lenova yoga to model in.

We don’t know what you are trying to do but the MMB does not and never has been used to select vertices.

What do you mean by warp, what lines. You need to show us what you have, what you are doing and what you want to achieve. Also please ALWAYS supply a link to your blend file so we can see what you can see

I would suggest you learn from sites that are more specialized with blender like CGCookie.com and BlenderGuru.com

Also it would help if you could link to the tutorial (not sure what the minimal time/posts is before you can posts links or if you even need to reach a minimum time/posts)

First off, selecting with right mouse button is not for me. So I set Preferences to select with left. Right mouse button simply place 3D courser.

Middle scroll button is used with Proportional Editing. With Proportional Editing “on” when you grab a point to drag with G key, circle appear around the point. This is the area of influence. Every points within the circle gets affected as you move depending of your influence setting. The circle size is controlled by middle scroll button.

To the OP, I first went through the Blender 3D: Noob to Pro course on wikibooks.org (see, if I had 10 posts, I could give you the URL). It’s not perfect, but pretty good as web tutorials go. Personally, I find that I have to get the basics under my belt first, otherwise most tutorials are just noise.
