Basic texture for critique

Hey guys,

I have been doing a couple of tuts on here on and off for a few months. I thought it was time to start doing my own work. Now, from looking around at other work, it occurs to me that a lot of the really great work has fantastic textures. Would I be right in guessing that even basic mesh modelling can come into it’s own with the right texures and lighting?

With that in mind I spent the last hour making a basic room and experimenting with a few textures - my first time with using textures. I found some textures on web and believe I have used them as some kind of embossed template - not sure of the term (bump map?). I did this using the Nor button.

If anyone could give me a quick definition of Col and Nor and when best to use them that would be great.

Well, I plan to just keep experimenting with this simple room and see if I can’t keep adding detail, perhaps blood and goo, smoke and steam effects to make it truly creepy.

Good start.

For the explanations of COL and NOR, your best resource is the Blender Guide that you can download at www.blender.org

For simple explanations, they are as follows:

COL: This slider affects the amount of colour that your texture will add to the basic material of the object. 1.0 is full colour, (i.e. all the texture colour is shown). As you go lower towards 0, the more the basic material colour will show.

NOR: This is for bump mapping, (i.e. making dents, scratches, etc).

The col slider determines how much the texture effects the basic color of the material, and the nor slider ( you have to have the nor button on the far right pressed that says nor. there are two, one is closer to the middle )
effects how much the material is effected by the texture in a 3D way. Also try pressing the empty tex buttons, and then adding new in textures, to add multiple texture layers. I’ll post a little example if it’s ok with you.

this is using the stucci texture as a bump map, along with marble and clouds in varying degrees

Cheers BgDM, I am sure those two buttons are going to be great to experiment with.

Thanks Modron, I didn’t really know about the sliders. By all means, please post an example. Any pointers are very welcome.

Also try pressing some of those other buttons over there by the nor and col buttons.
