Hi. I am a beginner with Blender. I am making Capt. Blender using the “Introducing Character Animation with Blender” book. So far i’ve been happy with the book and learned quite a bit but occasionally the author will tell you to use a tool without going into great detail about how to use it. Right now i am trying to use the knife (exact) tool to cut the back of Capt.'s hand and not positive how to use it. I selected the 4 faces on the back of his hand and drew the cut through the edges like the figure in the book and hit enter and my cut just disappears and nothing happens. What am I doing wrong? Also is there a list somewhere that list the most common/used tools in blender and explains them a bit? I haven’t found one yet.
This is the cut i am trying to make. (Cut draw in with gimp) When I hit enter it just disappears. Do i have the right edges/faces selected? Am i suppose to hit enter? Adding to my confusion the author says to use the knife (exact) tool while in the figure in the book it shows him selecting the knife (midpoint) tool. Thanks for any help in advance.
thanks for your response. Yeah i tried enter, left mouse, and right mouse and they just cancel it - except for left mouse because that is to make another cut. There must be some option i have switched on somewhere that is messing with it. Other then that the only thing i can think of is that Capt. Blender doesn’t like knives.
here is a link of tool descriptions like i was looking for that i final found if anyone is looking for the same thing. There they say to hit enter for the cut tools and i tried adding a cube and plane and was able to cut it however the hand won’t cut. So it must be my selection that is causing the problem?
i tried both with everything selected and with just the whole hand selected and nothing. I don’t know why a cube and plane would cut but my mesh is not. But then again im fairly new to blender so it could be something simple i just don’t know about.
ok i figured out what was going on. I never tried on the other hand. The side i am trying to make the cut on is the side of my mesh that is mirrored. I did it on the other hand and it works. So for anyone that is having a similar problem just try the other side.
