Beginner first render

Hello, I am new to blender and 3D in general. I have been following tutorials and workbooks trying to learn this program. I have been using blender for 2 weeks now. I just finished my first real render. I did it of my RC Helicopter. The workbook I was using told me to come here and post. This is what it told me to say.

Hello. I’m new to the Blender and have completed the tutorials on Beginning Modeling found at the online wikibook http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Blender_3D:_Noob_to_Pro. Before I continue with the wikibook, I need some feedback from the community about my skill level so that I need to determine my progress so far. Please evaluate my model and these screenshots for the following: 1) I demonstrate an ability to navigate in 3D space. 2) I demonstrate an understanding of the basic parts of a 3D model, such vertices, edges, and faces. 3) I demonstrate an ability to create form in three dimensions. Please assist me with any feedback on my model, keeping in mind that I am an absolute beginner still. I appreciate your help. Thanks.

That’s a great model stuntridah! Brilliant for your first model. You’ve definitely reached all your criteria. You seem to pay great attention to detail, however, looking at the wires, it seems there can be quite a bit of improvement, specifically in the yellow bit (Don’t know what it’s called sorry :o)
Good luck for the future!

By the way, I’ve seen models like this fetch stupid prices on www.turbosquid.com.

Thanks Alex. That link you sent me, What is it? People acually buy pics? If you sell one do you give up the right to post them? Ah well I wouldnt sell them, there not good enough and its my first. I didnt know people acually buy them.

ah, no. They buy the models, not the pics.

Ya thats what I ment. Thats kinda cheap if you ask me. Who would want to buy a model?

Hey you’re good…for a 2 weeks blender user…keep it up…

Thanks, I spent about 40 hours on this.

Great first model! Little too polygon heavy, but good. I wish I could make something this good after 2 weeks in 3D!

Thanks a lot but what do you mean polygon heavy? If theres anything I can do better or any advice please let me know. Thanks.

hello stuntridah,

your model is great, for a beginner  , so I just have some questions : did you follow any tutorial (for this model) or so? and did you use any 3d software before blender ? do you have any 3d background ?

about the model, yeah, it’s too polygon heavy : that means there are lots of vertices and faces in it. and you dont need that much polys.

in the pic n 8 I see that you used smooth mesh but you have to activate the auto smooth button to get better results

BTW the textures are also good, for just two weeks of blender use !!

Hi Al. To answer your ques. No I did not follow a tutorial. I have the real chopper sitting next to me for reference. No 3D software before blender. No 3D background. I use photoshop a lot and make cool graphics sometimes. That might help me with creating the model, I dont know. The reason it came out ok I think was because I made each piece seperate then put it together, like I was buliding the real thing. I dont know how to keep the polygon level down. Like I said I am a beginner and dont know much, except to shape a cube or cylinder… Thanks for the input.
