Beginner Struggling with Character Creation Workflow

Hi everyone!

I’ve been learning Blender for about two months now. I’ve gone through the Blender Guru’s Donut tutorial and a few other beginner tutorials, so I have some basic knowledge of the software. The main reason I picked up Blender, though, is to create my own stylized characters.

Here’s where I’m struggling: There are so many character creation tutorials out there, but they all seem to use different methods, and I’m feeling overwhelmed. I understand that each artist has their own unique approach to creating characters, but since I’ve never made one before, I don’t know where to start or how to develop my own workflow.

I should mention that I’m working with a pretty basic setup – a Core i3, 11th Gen, Asus VivoBook 14 – so sculpting isn’t really an option for me right now, given the performance limitations. I’ve seen that sculpting is popular for character creation, but I simply don’t have the resources or the hardware to handle it.

With that in mind:

  • Are there any character creation tutorials or workflows that don’t rely heavily on sculpting, which would be more suited to my low-end hardware?
  • What steps would you recommend I follow as a beginner to understand the process of creating stylized characters without jumping straight into advanced techniques?

I’d really appreciate any guidance or recommendations on where to go from here. Thanks in advance for your help!
