Bending a Plane Using a Curve Modifier

Hello,
I am very new to Blender and still haven’t learned every single thing about it. Please, I remind you to be kind.
My question: I was watching a tutorial by BlenderGuru on how to create a subway station, and he used a technique to curve the tunnel. He made an array of cylinders and used a curve modifier to get the cylinders to curve exactly the way he wanted them to. I attempted doing that on a single plane, but instead of curving, the plane only either:
a) changed it’s sides sizes
or
b) moved the sides only and remained a perfect rectangular plane
How would I use a curve modifier to actually curve the plane? Thanks!

For a plane to bend you need sufficient geometry to allow it to make a curve. You would need to subdivide the plane with loop cuts (Ctrl+R) or subdivision (W / subdivide or subsurf modifier)

Thanks for the info!
