Benz Patent Motorwagen

I’ve been working on this model of the first purpose built, self propelled car patented in Germany by Karl Benz in 1886. The modelling work is pretty much finished and now I’m working on the textures and lighting. Built in Blender 2.69/2.7 and rendered in Cycles.

Any comments and advice would be appreciated.

looking nice

front wheel seems to be too thin!

what is the back horizontal wheel doing ?

how does the front wheel turns
linkage seems so small!

happy cycles

The front wheel is thin in all the photos on the web. In fact, I used the drawing on the original patent application from 1886 for the main dimensions. The link between the steering handle and the wheel may be too thin. I’ll have another look. When the steering handle is turned from side-to-side there is a rack and pinion at the bottom of the steering post which moves the link to turn the wheel.

The horizontal wheel is a flywheel that keeps the engine steady when it’s running. It also serves as the starter. There are several film clips on YouTube showing how a person gives the flywheel a vigorous turn to get the engine going.

Here are a couple of more detailed views of the engine.

these were the first engine I guess and not high tech !

thanks for technical details and very interesting

happy cycles

I check pic on web

and some models seems to have a very thin tire at front

thanks

excellent modelling !!!
we have a similar “vehicle” in my local museum
and the only thing lacking on yours is over 100 yrs of dirt and abuse

then thin wheels must have been a nitemare on cobbled roads
