Beskar Head

It’s kind of odd that a little over a year has passed since I posted this thread. A lot indeed has changed.

I’m a 2D artist, I don’t doubt it by now. However, even though I know that if I can make it on paper, then I’d be able to make it in 3D, I didn’t anticipate how far of a road it will take me.

I kind of understand by now why many 2D artists don’t bother to cross the river to the 3D world. Sure, a lot of us have used 3D for kit bashing for a long time, but kit bashing is quite different than crossing the river.

For me, it started with the feeling of frustration. Because 2D artists are used to being gods. If we think some light over the shoulder of a character will look good, so light there will be. If we think a character is a bit taller, then a shrinkage of height there will be.

It’s not like that in 3D. As a 2D artist in 3D world, to be honest, I feel like a peasant. Back then, I thought of it in a bad way, that’s why I felt frustrated. But in frustration, I came to appreciate the technical nature of the 3D world, and how to tend it properly. And by doing it properly, I got to wield, at least some of the god like commands I have in 2D world.

So today, I think of being a peasant in a good way.

Now that I think of it, it’s been a really good year, at least if not for anything else, it’s for my 3D skills growth.

So to celebrate it, here’s some render I took from my latest project. I called it Beskar, or in this case, a Beskar Head. Just like its namesake, I wish it to be nearly unbreakable, and to be able to carry me safely across the long windy field of 3D world.

And if you’d like to see the short animation, go here.

I hope you enjoy them, as much as I have in creating them.

No way, I have been reflecting on the exact same issue the last few days.

While I find myself as a very competent 2D artist / cartoonist, when I try to do something similar in 3D it looks like a f*cking joke. Feels too much like a technical hassle, in my opinion. It kind of takes away that artistic “feeling” and flow, in contrast to drawing. When I try my hand at sculpting instead (which is a bit more like drawing), sure, it’s looks okay, not bad, but still far from the same artistic expression depicted in a drawing. I guess this is a reason I joined Blender Artist, when I am brave enough I will give 3D art a new try (with the risk of being laughed at ).

Thanks for sharing your little story and expirence, congratulation on getting this far in 3D! Looks great so far.
