Best use of resourses?

Hey all,

I followed the recent links to slashdot.org recently, and saw this:

…researchers at CalTech have discovered a new alloy that is stronger than steel and titanium, can be cast in a mold like plastic, and sharpened like glass. The first plans for the new alloy are to be used in golf clubs, baseball bats, skis, and cell phone covers.

Does anyone else feel that there would be like a gazillion better uses for an advancement like this, rather than golf clubs, baseball bats and skis type stuff?

I think the world puts far to much resources and finaces into Sports which really dosent benifit the human race beyond entertainment and produceing over paid, spoiled brat “Super Stars”. And as far as entertainment value, personally I find it not much more than a bunch of guys chassing a ball around a feild.

Sure it takes strength, coordination and heaps of people are like addictivly in love with sports, and thats fine. But <!!!-Personally-!!!> i just find it a waste of time and a HUGE waste of resources and $$$.

Can you imagine Blender receiving even just one, say, Hockey player’s sallery per year, every year? Blender would continue without any financial problems, and just think about all the players out there, not to mention the HUGE stadiums, television broadcasts of and so so so much more.

And really, Blender itself is pretty much a creater of Entertainment, as are movies and television shows. Imagine if we took most of the funds for Sports and Movies, leaving them with modest and far more reasonable budgets, and put that money into things which will insure mankinds survival. Things like space programs and alternative energy resources, anti-pollution technology, health care and education.

Anywayz, im sure you all reading this get the idea of what im trying to say, so i will cut it short.

Blend on, and blend well!!!

Aw, where’s the fun in that?

You might think that a superficial and kind silly comment, but if it’s ‘fun’ it will attract alot of people, alot of people attracts alot of money, and alot of money will therefore be spent on ‘fun’ to attract more people

If you could make people realise they should interest themselves in pollution and energy instead of hockey and action movies, then the money would follow by itself.

That’s how I see it. People control money in the big scene, not the other way around.

I read this morning that the company which designed the process (actually quite interesting) was pulling out of the golf market entirely. Now, they are going to utilize this superstrong metal for something that will REALLY benefit mankind — cell phone casings. :o

Whether it be entertainment, money-making, or destruction, everyone cares about themselves. I’m guilty of this. Everyone is. (Upon realizing what he’s said, CubeFan973 immediately hits himself.)

What, use all that money to benefit the nerds that use it?

But seriously. Where is the money? it takes money to make this happen. Money to make iot, ,pay the salary of the workers, and for more r & d. But I’ll bet you watch TV. I bet you watch movies with “spoiled brat” movie stars. Do you watch baseball? Football? soccer, ,basketball, ,hockey? Your grasp on economics is feeble at best. Might be a good idea to take a macro-econ class sometime. open your eyes a little.

Get your ass out of your desk chair and go out and so something, instead of bitching about how the world works.

Or it might be best just to become another economical robot!!!

Darkbyrd, if no one ever discusses the fact that society is bascially backwards, where will that get us. New ideas and innovations come from people who “bitch about how the world works”.

Take it easy bro, we’re all entitled to our oppinions, and me voiceing mine is no reason to go hostile.

I’m sorry, that wasn’t meant to come off as hostile

PS: yay! lets start a thread about how economy is f_cked up!

Armour, APCs, tanks, aircraft, bunker and the like.

Was that suggestions on good things to use resources on or bad things?
(Perhaps obvious, but you never know  )

Well, considering that many innovations, and applications of innovations, came from military technology, and pushed forth by war, this may be a good thing. War is inevitable, so research will go forth, where as corporate budgets are not always in favor of innovation.

I can’t help but wonder how brittle it is? What’s it’s modulus of elasticity?

I guess you have to get the research paid for, but if it really has tensil strength like metal, yet, what? compression strength too? and is lightweight? It might find it’s way into cars, and space ships, etc… But things like cars become very expensive with these materials at first. However, if they can pay for the research, and if actual manufacture of the matel becomes less expensive with time, the best thing to do is get the developement paid for via sports and luxury items until it can be manufactured in quantites where it really can make a difference.

er, I should be in bed, work tomorrow :stuck_out_tongue: Ingie

I totaly agree with Bapsis. Sport are entertaning and fun to watch but there is noway so muh money should be in it. In the 50s’ it was entertainement too but the player would make normal kind of salary. Maybe people take it too seriously. Its just a game anyway.

I am well aware of the economic aspect of sport but it dosent meen because something work a certain way in our world that i cant be critized or even changed.

hello

i think that we should use that stuff for … toothpicks

Exactly what I wanted to say

The other thing with sports that I personally just hate is how many people take it way too seriously. For example, where I live (Hungary), many people are just obsessed with soccer (football in Europe). The fans of some of the major teams are given seperate subways and trains, plus police escort to get to the stadium, to prevent them beating up fans of other teams. One larger game has literally hundreds of cops and swat people ensuring security outside. One time the stadium of the opposing team was set on fire (!), all the chairs just melted away. FUN???
