Best video tutorials?

So I am new to BGE and I am wondering if there are some good video tutorials to start out with?
I already know the blender interface and how to model/texture/etc… Basically I can do animation in blender and I want to expand my knowledge to be able make small games.
I know there are some good text tutorials I saw on the tutorial topic page, and I will read those when I have some more time (like over Christmas break or something). But for now I’d just like to watch some videos of people who know what they are doing demonstrating how the basics of game logic works.

Also, on a side note. After researching quite a bit I noticed alot of people say they only do their modeling in Blender and then they do the actual game in Unity 3D? From your perspectives, would I benefit more from learning how to use unity 3D in addition to blender. Or is it worth me just learning the BGE, I am a very big fan of Blender, I just know nothing of video game development.

Thanks in advance to anyone who helps.

You would benefit most if you learn both. This will enable you to see the differences and similarities of both engines. But this is like learning two foreign languages at the same time. (Btw. there re much more game engines out there  ).

Which one you use it up to you and your needs.

If you do not care which game engine you want to start with, the BGE is nicely integrated in Blender  and the community is nice and helpful.

I have used both the BGE and Unity (free version). Based on the fact that you are brand new to game development and already know the blender interface, I would suggest starting by getting to know the blender game engine. You should definitely read Monster’s Guides (found in his signature). A good source of video tutorials is Goran’s tutorials. Here’s a link: http://www.nilunder.com/tutorials There are a lot of other good tutorial links from blenderartists, you just have to search around a little. Good luck and have fun!

Also, some advice:

  • Learn programming (python for BGE). It makes many many things easier than being restricted by the logic bricks. (This applies for any engine: learn scripting). It may help to learn bricks first, but don’t stop there.
  • When doing tutorials, do everything yourself. Do not use starting-blends or just dissect ending-blends. That doesn’t help you much. It’s like Maths at school: The only way to learn is to do example after example. When you’ve learned the techniques, you can apply them into a game.
  • Don’t be too ambitious at first, lest you be put off by the sheer imposibility of what you are trying to do. One guy who’s doing this really well at the moment is RossBlenderArt. He’s one of the newer members, but has released 4 games. They may be simple, but are fun to play.

Awesome. Thanks for the advice. I will try out your suggestions, I think I will do both Blender and Unity and see where it gets me. I think I’ll start learning Python as well, seems like that will help me alot.

And well I’m at it - learning stuff. Does anyone know of any good tutorials/articles/books on game development theory or anything?
