So, I have a space ship that I’ve created and I’d like to add greeble type details, what’s the best method.
I’d prefer not to do it by hand, but that is a possibility I suppose. I have seen a displacement map method, but have had trouble replicating that to my satisfaction. Are there any other methods that people use?
Well, I don’t know what “greeble” is but I’d say… add either a multires and use sculpting or use a subsurf and play around with vertex pulling ^^ the latter is my preferred method
What’s the purpose of this ship? Game model? Just for an artistic render? Animation?
Either way I’d recommend baking a displacement map after you’re done and probably a normal map and some other nice maps (to reduce render times or to make it feasible as a game model)
There’s different methods, modeling bigger stuff into your main mesh (inset, extrude, etc.), but you’ll have to plan out your mesh topology accordingly. You can also use floating geometry if you’re fine with sharp edges from intersections (and probably not as good for game models). Smaller details usualy done via normal mapping, eighter by using prerendered greebel textures or by baking them yourself from geometry. And depending on the look you might want to bake out thinks like AO-dirtmaps to complement your texturing, and overlaying other textures as well for the finishing touches.
