Best way to use real footage as reference in Blender?

I got this idea of using real footage for animation after seeing someone on youtube using it in Maya with really great results. And it makes sense, it’s a reference, just like how you would use reference for modelling. So I want to use some footage of myself to pratice doing some animations.

But I want to be able to place in the viewport or atleast somewhere easy enough that will allow me to go trough the footage frame by frame, that last bit is really important.

So, what’s the best way to achieve this in Blender?

You can enable the add-on “Import images as planes” and load a video file.
