beveling a smooth curve

In this video at about 1:30 this guy uses bevel to turn an angled cone into a smooth curved surface. I’ve tried and tried to replicate what he did but can’t get it to do anything but make an angled cone.

I’ve tried to do what did did but never get a curve, like a bowl shape. Any advice?

It sounds like you are wanting the hard/smooth edges option; he’s utilising “mark sharp”.

Edit: oh I see… he gets the circular edge of the cylinder. He evens this to become two edges. With these still selected, he bevels again… Is that what you mean?

Yes, I try to do that to turn a sharp cone into a somewhat bowl like curve and get nothing like what he got.

Edit: Actualy I may have found my mistake. He was beveling from an angled loop, I wasn’t.

One thing I notice is that he slected a line to bevel and somehow it instantly becomes two lines, it doesn’t do that when I try it. Also his bevels seem to make the edges curve, and again I just get a cone with a lot of loops in it.

Did you convert the mesh to a curve, then try bevel?

I finally got to play with this. It’s quite a simple trick. make sure you are on edges mode and select only the edgeloops running around the circle (not the “spokes” connecting the two circles, as this would result in selecting all faces. When you do this, th edges are beveled in the right direction and they end up smoothing to the round shape you are after.

Note that with the new 2.65 bevel, selecting these same edges and having 2 or more “segments” produces the same effect in an instant.

Get a newer build… like 2.65 if you haven’t already, select the loop of edges you want to bevel, hit Ctrl+B and drag the mouse to the right I believe to increase the bevel size and use the scroll wheel to increase number of divisions.

That’s how the above was done here.

Now that’s EXACTLY what I was wanting to know! Thank you!

Seriously, I wish this board had a thank you function or a thumbs up one. I’d have used it here.
