BGMC 23 - Start Date + Theme ideas

BGMC 22 finished about a month ago, which makes it a good idea to think about BGMC 23

Theme
***Post theme ideas under this thread and we will put the best ones into the theme voting.

Date
***The earliest possible time to start BGMC would be 23rd of January, however we want to choose a date that works best for everyone, so vote on which week would work best for you!

Game Engines
***Any engine that is integrated into the Blender interface, this includes:
-BGE
-UPBGE
-Blend4Web
-Panda3D via Moguriā€™s panda3D plugin
-Armoury

To gain the maximum number of votes it is recommended you export your game!
Last BGMC there was an UPBGE entry that could not be played by people who didnā€™t have the latest version of UPBGE.

Assets
***You are permitted to use any assets that are freely available to everyone (blendswap etc.).
You cannot use assets if others cannot access them freely.

Restrictions

***We have increased the file restriction to 50mb compressed (source files) .zip, this should be plenty of space for any game made in a week.

Penalties
***1% penalty per MB over the limit.
10% penalty per day past the end date.

Conditions of Entry
***All projects must be released open-source, regardless of engine. This includes blend files for the assets if they are exported into some intermediate format (Eg json for blend4web), any scripts, sounds and so on.

The winner will take responsibility for organizing BGMC 24

We are hoping to make this BGMC really big, and have already got the blend4web team onboard, so hopefully this competition will be great!

There are already a couple prizes lined up for the top 3 places, but if you want to donate anything you can PM me or Genzer and we will add it. Prizes will be announced when the competition starts.

If I have missed anything let me know

Yes! I love BGMC. I am looking forward to it. I have no preference on the time. I am excited to see how this competition works out.

Great  If you have any ideas for theme feel free to post them!

My ideas for theme:

  • sandbox
  • simulator
  • clicker/idle

Hello!

Suggestions:
Atmosphere
Story
AI

Theme ideas = Unstable, dragon, pieces, melting

Theme ideas:
-forest
-build
-Racing

maybe I will take a risk this time and use armory engine? I have it and it is still very primitive but I wonder how it would work out.

+1 for Atmosphere

A copy paste of some good themes (high scoring) from last time:

  • Drones
  • Survival
  • Atmosphere
  • Tell a story
  • Time Control

It was Drones up till the day before and the others were only a vote or two off (in order)

Iā€™m keen for any theme I can twist caves or spaceships or glowing lights into.

Whatā€™s up with the vague themes?? Thatā€™s what I really hated about every BGMC. Take LudumDare themes as example:

+1 for Build and Racing

Perhaps try a really simple demo (like a moving cube) and see if you can get that working on another PC.

I guess if we make the theme too restrictive then people lack creative freedom.
Build and racing is vague too isnā€™t it?
Reincarnation could be a fun theme

I dont think reincarnation is a good idea because think about it: where do you see reincarnation? In fantasy books, fantasy video games. etcā€¦ I think that reincarnation is just a really difficult topic to build on.

Theme - Giants from the Earth, Roman empire, The last of us.

I was thinking something along the lines of prop hunt and being resurrected as a tin of sardines, but I guess you are right, beyond this it doesnā€™t provide much creative freedom.

Iā€™m co-hosting, so Iā€™m not competing, but Iā€™ll throw ā€œdemasteredā€ out there again. It got several votes for theme last BGMC.
Also, taking some from the Lundum Dare list, I think ā€œLeft Aloneā€, ā€œRuinsā€, and ā€œYou must leave it behindā€ all sound like interesting ideas.

How about:

  • trading

I always love the BGMC, my votes for themes will as usual include:
Beat 'em up
Racing

But Iā€™d also like to add:
Rescue
Treasure hunt
Do not disturb!

For anyone that uses facebook there is now a facebook group for BGMC.
This will be mainly just announcements and reminders.

ā€œThe Last Of Usā€ Awesome game, I played it twice. Maybe a little too much language, but still great. Perhaps a theme with smart AI. Like the the infected in ā€œThe Last Of Usā€ or the pirates/privateteers in ā€œFar Cry 3ā€ Or maybe a snippet of an old game, like the tank room in ā€œJakk and Daxter 2ā€ Except not so damn hard.

+1 demastered, I thing that would be really fun!

how bout something like Assassinā€™s Creed Brotherhood? like free world where you can run on, over, and jump off of ledges to kill enemies? I know its possible within 50 mbs cz the gameplay will make up for te low poly buildings and stuff! And irā€™ll have awesome story too!
also my suggestions:
-forest
-Atmospere
-Story
-freeworld Action

This might be a bit complicated to create in 1 week, let alone the mechanics of takedowns and ledge climbing.
Keep it as simple as possible! My advice is to try and build the core game within the first couple days, then for the rest of the time build levels + optimize. If you still have spare time after this then use this to add more features or make the game more interesting.

An interesting/engaging/fun game will rank higher than a complicated game.
Donā€™t build a tech demo, build a game!
