BGMC 23 Theme voting

I’d be happy with either “Tell a Story” or “Atmosphere”, so I’m happy one of those are winning!

So whats a “Tell a Story”?

What I will do if the theme wins is have the player go around a desert ruin area and find stones with writing and learn the story of the place.

I think “tell a story” is just as vague as “atmosphere”

But I don’t really mind. To be honest I’d be happy with just about any of the themes up there.

Never brainstorm out loud. Your idea can be stolen

I think the better theme is tell a story, as a story has atmosphere whereas an atmosphere might not have a story.
It also adds to the sense of completion after the game beyond just having a highscore.

 so tell a story na that’s awesome…

then you might as well not post a WIP thread while your making your game.

Cmooooon street fighter! Oh wait I’m the only one ;[

Make a street fighter game where the player learns about the backstory to the characters/setting

wooo!!! tell a story ftw

“tell a story” is a broad topic too, but not ambiguous. It should be no big deal to see if the topic gets met. It provides a huge range of different games with different styles.

I think that is not that easy. Especially if you have a longer story to tell.

dont have to tell all the story, just enough to capture the person play by it, so it’s a story driven game… :eyebrowlift:

The risk with ‘tell a story’ is that people will only create cinematics and no actual gameplay that is interesting. I think getting the balance right between gameplay and story will be difficult.

That is an interesting perspective.

To be declared as a game there must be some form of interaction by the audience (I do not see a “play” button as enough interaction to be a game;) , I guess for most of us it is not).

Oh yes, that is a challenge.

I like the theme, voted for it.

sounds fun, I am excited for either choice- it will help me branch out a little bit.

That’s a more interesting theme.
Atmosphere is good, even literal planetary atmosphere, but we’ve had several like that before.

Tell a story will be a first I believe.

Actually it might be a good idea to brainstorm the “story” part of your entry before hand, as the detail of making a game will take up the rest of the time. I’ve recently been writing a book and I was having a lot of trouble with it. It’s really not so easy to write compelling stories. After some research (and talking with a friend who is a College Lecturer who teaches creative writing) it turns out there’s a particular way of doing it. Just like making games, writing fiction, or “telling a story” has a certain amount of craft that needs to be learned.

For some tips I suggest reading about the “action-reaction” cycle. (another name is the Scene-Sequel chain.)
I’m going to post in my blog about how these might be used when making games with a semi-linear narrative.

I recognize this problem from my last entire “The not so brave little pig” to some extent. Some parts of the game had to be cut down for the lack of time. One element that got a much smaller part that what I initially planned was the stealth. As it turned out you only had to hide from one tree at a specific point, this was meant to come back now and then for some variation.

Another part was when “the dress was caught in the wind”. This was meant to be a sort of haunting for the red piece of cloth as it went further and further into the scary forest, which also would include hiding and a few other functions.

These sacrifices weren’t made to get in the way of the story directly, but indirectly since it took plenty of the time.

The words written above may seem a bit negative, but I’m really excited to see the results. And excited to see what I will come up with as a story-writer, at the moment I have just a blank paper in front of me.

The other downside of “Tell a Story” is, not everyone here can speak English very well. I’m not a native English speaker, I don’t know complex words or formal language.
Although one can create a story without words I feel like that isn’t enough…
