Push in the edges of the book, as if it has been pinched shut a lot, smooth out the corners, make the binding a bit fluffier and bulgier, and when you texture it, make sure the corners and edges are a sort of white or yellowish color (for the bits where the real color has worn off), while the rest of the book still has the original coloring.
EDIT: And skew the whole thing a little bit. Books don’t sit perfectly like that. The top cover can be rotated a bit off the bottom cover. Like this: take the book, hold it with both your palms, one on each cover, and just slide your hands around a bit. The pages make a bit of a wave.
A well-bound well-taken-care-of book will sit flat like that. I should know for all the books I have. I agree with having creases in the spine, but even more than that (especially, again, with a quality leather-bound book), you would see subtle creases in the back of the textblock. The hinges sometimes get a little worn extra fast at the top and bottom.
Do consider how an old bible may have been used, and what sort this is. Is this one with soft leather binding and a thin vellum textblock? It may generally have been held pinched on one side.
Later on, just be aware of how this sort of binding wears out. Pick up a bible, look at the corners, the spine, &c. It doesn’t need to be an old bible, as long as you can see where it was glued together and how it was stitched and bound.
Adding a lot more light (not harsh, just making the whole scene brighter with more lights) will definitely improve the scene.
