bicycle handlebar tape, best method?

Whats the smartest method for modeling this?


Im thinking curves with some bevel-object, but Im searching for some even quicker way to do it.

You can see this about a tennis racquet:

use the screw tool, then use curve deform on the resulting mesh.
(edit) actually spline IK might work better than curve deform.

Screw and curve worked wonders (Spline IK looks complicated)
