Although with the hefty look, that wicked widow’s peak he’s got going on, and the baby face, Im thinking Mafia thug.
I would love to see this character with the tilted bronx hat and a simple ivory longsleeve shirt with the sleeves rolled up just under the elbows. I like the overalls though. And im also thinking black work boots.
i’ve always wanted to do a prohibition-era type of short, even had a character made up for it a while back (just no story). maybe i’ll look into that, something to mull over. everyone likes a good mafia flick
the more i think about the mafia idea, the more i like it. big lou does sort of sound like a mob nickname…
anyways, i created some more clothes, a pair of trousers and a button-up with tie. not 100% on the red color, but i think it works. yes, yes, i know he’s still barefoot. i’ll probably give him some wingtips.
sculpted a high rez version of his shirt and used it to apply some tangent normals to the low-poly version. not a lot, just some extra wrinkles and creases here and there. the buttons on the shirt are pure bump map.
Mafia enforcer’s a good choice, but his default expression looks a little too milquetoastish, no? I think it’s the angle of his eyebrows, which give him a slightly worried look, even a little timid. Unless you’re trying to play against type, which can be a good way to go also. In that case, maybe a pink thin-striped shirt? Vertical stripes, 'cause he thinks they make him look thinner
Yeah, more to type now. Cel shade looks OK to me but whether it’s right or not depends somewhat on the story context, eh? If he’s a bit of a “Whitey” type (Flushed Away), with comic overtones, cel is good. If he’s more a thug from the Godfather series, well, nope.
Big ol’ cowboy hat (black, of course) with rattler-skin band, string tie with longhorn steer clasp (or crossed six-shooters) and, of course, shiny, pointy-toed, black 'gator-skin cowboy boots.
Nice stuff there Ward! Really enjoyed your tutorials. I looks like this character is coming on great. Just to help with the walk cycle include a bit of up and down motion and then maybe put some shape keys in with it so it makes his fat bounce when he takes a step and fly up a bit when he gets to the pass pos. The model you have done is great! I agree with chipmasque about the grubby part except put it on the tie only. It would give him more character of how lazy or outstanding they are. You do give bags of emotion I have seen in your other videos but keep up the great stuff!
The Chicago mobs also hustled lots of Canadian whiskey, if the Untouchables was anywhere near accurate. I think the stills they busted up were as often brewing beer as hootch.
speaking of zoot suit… perhaps i’ll try to give him some pinstripes. that might be a little difficult, as the texture map is not in straight lines but i’ll play with it.
I get the impression looking at the hat that it’s very Italian/Sicilian in style. Same for the length of the coat. 'Course, that’d make him Luigi ‘stead o’ Lou, but then, you don’t want him mistaken for Mario’s brudder
seems i only get around to working on this guy about once or twice a week anyways, took some time today to start on the violin case. i started on the tommygun last night, but i’m adding so much (too much?) detail that i haven’t really gotten much further than the nose of it
but here’s a couple of shots of the violin case with a red velvet lining. still need the hinges, latches, and handle, and a few custom items inside (going from THIS).
