at school a music teacher sent an email around about a of competition to win £50 pounds. the email asked if anyone could design a logo for his record label ‘Big Red Rabbit Records’.
So I would like your help in critiquing my attempt at the design. the design is partly influenced by deadmau5, as the teacher listed the mau5 head to be one of the design influences. So I have gone with a simple stylised rabbit head. the other image of more simple 2D design is a design by another student. and in the teachers own words…
‘‘The image that I have attached to this email is a example that someone has already made and it is in the ball park of what I am looking for. I just thought that I would share that info with the rest of you to streamline your creativity with the stylistic vision of the label.’’
do you think I am getting somewhere with my design?
Very much like your design, but I would take off the X’s from the eyes. I’d say just make the eyes a little darker and its perfect. But that is personal opinion and I think it still looks good.
Oh man, I would have thought this thread would have died by now. Thanks for the crits. Here is an update and a sheet of different eyes as I couldn’t decide. Maybe you could take a look and choose one?
I will check out the toon lines and darker ideas. Going to bed now though
I took out the background which was a heavily edited image of a volumetric cloud I rendered. It made it look too busy.
I think from the example old mate attached I would interpret that he is looking for a much less busy piece. I think the simple shapes in the example are what you should be focusing on. Although what you have there has some potential, I would go for a robot rabbit. You’ve already got it looking kind of like metal. Also since it is a 2d render you can go all out with the polycount, for instance the cheeks are very angular, looks like 4 edges. And I don’t know where you got the square eyes from. Again, you can go as high poly as you want. I think you should stick to simple shapes, the idea with logos is for them to be easily recognizable, so that when you see any colours arranged in that way the logo pops into your head. There’s studies on that somewhere.
As for the writing I think that’s too busy as well. It certainly fits your design, it all looks a bit industrial, but I don’t think it’s what your teacher wanted. There is a trade off between what you want to make and what the client wants to see, and always go with what the client wants to see.
To cap off, I think your teacher wants simple shapes and not too busy an image, it has to be easily recognisable.
Actually I kind of like the angles and low poly look of the rabbit. Looks grungy and is the complete opposite of what I normally think of bunnies- that is- cute and cuddly. And after further review my favorite is the last large one you posted next to the smaller ones. I think thats the best. And while the less busy background is better, you may want to consider adding something to the black so its not completely empty. Perhaps something like smoke, pipes or metal to fit the industrial feeling? Regardless I think its awesome, best of luck!
I kinda like the last one (the big one with the X’ed-out eyes and wavy whiskers) – only wouldn’t he be more appropriate for ‘Big DEAD Rabbit Records’?!
I have no say in the name of the record label, I am just the designer. I am a little miffed actually as I have not heard a word back. and it seems neither of the others have. so it is rather hard to adjust my designs when I have had no feedback.
polycount is absolutely no issue! but I am going for a raw digital look, by showing the digital skeleton and making no effort so hide its CGI roots. the image i am going for is my take on these 2 attached files. a character from David Orielly’s Please Say Something which goes for a shadeless low poly look, and the deadmau5 head. (That deadmau5 head is actually an exact replica I made in blender to learn radiosity)
I like the gold teeth idea. and you are probably right about this image being too complex for a logo.
Now I think that deadmau5 logo is pretty good. simple shapes, very focused attention zone and it’s easy to remember. If you are going to the raw digital look then maybe you should google for grungemaps and research that a bit? Also just because you haven’t heard anything back doesn’t mean you should stop. You can keep developing more. I would try starting from scratch again and working on it till you have another display sheet like the one in your third post. Then you can present them all and maximize your chances of pleasing the client, or at least get a better idea.
