Black Render Errors

Greetings all…

Just got a new laptop (well new to me)

Thinkpad T61
Running Win 7 Home premium (64)
Graphics: Mobile Intel 965 Express Chipset Family
Monitor: generic PnP

Blender version : Kai’s Blender for 64
Python: 2.6

Ok so here goes…

Go the computer today and had to set it up right away to check out its speed and how well it rendered… Got Kai’s installed and python and loaded a large file of mine and hit F12… and nothing but black screen… nothing… let it sit and set and waited…

Nothing…

So I started looking around and I saw that some others had this issue with Intel/OpenGL and that they hit the left mouse button and got their render… sure enough that worked it was there… BUT

that really don’t do it for me… I want to see it go thru the render and not just be a black screen…

I went thru Intel and downloaded the latest drivers (8.15.10.1930) and rebooted and I still get this issue… even tried other versions of Blender and different blend files… still all the same…

So what gives and how gan I get this corrected?

Anyone…?

Please help a buddy out

Cujo

(BTW: if I change from my driver to a generic VGA driver… Blender works correctly but is painfully slow…that’s why I felt it was a driver issue and came here)

it most probably is a driver issue, as you say. Intel is notorious for poor blender performance.

Ok…

I just noticed that I seem to have some other issues too…

Can’t see bounding box when selecting (b)
Can’t see line when splitting the screens

This is crazy… andyone know of a work around or something???

i dont think theres anything you can do except wait for driver updates and hope they fix the bugs.

Well it seems I have the typical Intel hell…

I disabled the Aero Theme and went to a straight plain
interface…

Well now I see the splash when it opens and I can see the render…
unless I click on X and close the render window… then I get a big
black box over the 3D window and just have to shut it down and open again…

Anyone else have this issue?

Got your PM.
I’m quite sorry, but I did not have the same problems that you are having. There was some quirkiness with the display not updating, but not at the magnitude you are describing. They were significantly lessened by a driver update, too. I should note, I’ve gotten a new computer since then.

Where did you get your driver? It’s always best to use the driver from your manufacture, if they provide one, of course.

I have off an on similar black screen issues while rendering. Sometimes on a larger scene. It comes and goes. What I sometimes have to do is click the icon in the lower tray to bring up the rendering window. Then I can see the render progress.

But for the most part all is well.

I am not sure how long ago you got your computer but when I was shopping for a laptop, I had to return one - actually two. After that I installed Blender on a flash drive and took it with me to the store. If I was not allowed to load up Blender (from the flash drive) on a machine and do test renders, I did not buy. Simple. Actually many of the salesmen were impressed that Blender would run from my flash drive.

I eventually settled on the HP Envy 15 which has the new Quad Core and is very fast.

But if you can not solve things right away and depending on the store policy, I would seriously consider taking it back. Personally I don’t like to muck about with a laptop if it is giving me problems. I want one that works out of the box.

If you bought it used from a private party I suppose you are stuck in driver hell.

For 3D the fastest thing you can get that actually works well is worth the extra cash.

Rich,

well I did buy it from a 2nd party… one of the IT guys at the school I teach at… the system is pretty nice, except for the probelm with the intel chip. I did install 2.5 alpha and that does seem to run pretty stable… so perhaps all is not lost :stuck_out_tongue: The system itself is a Model Thinkpad T61 with:

Intel Dual Core Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz
4 GB of RAM
high resolution 14.1" Monitor, has the native resolution of a 17" monitor (1440x900 vs 1280x800)
Internal 250 GB Hard drive
Hot swappable CD-RW/DVD-ROM with a 500 GB HD currently installed.
Fingerprint reader
802.11 b/g Wireless
10/100/1000 Ethernet
3 USB 2.0 ports, SD Card reader
9 Cell battery
Windows 7
6.5 months left on warranty.

All for $600… and since I have a limited budget, he let me set up a lil payment deal with him… so I didn’t have to outlay a hunk of cash all at once… anyway…it’s a good deal to me… so I will just have to start learning the 2.5 interface … hahahaha

I was enjoying Kai’s blender build for the Image Based Lighting: Diffuse prefiltered (HDRI)… oh well, perhaps someone will work that into a 2.5 build
