blend two textures via alpha mask for displacement modifier possible?

Hi there

can you blend to image textures via an alpha mask to generate a new image texture outcome which could be feed to the texture slot of the displacement modifier?

I know in Cycles for rendering this can work but for modifiers?

The only way I can think of to make that work would be to bake the mixed result to a new image texture. In BI I suppose you might be able to pull it off with texture nodes (I haven’t actually tried but don’t know of any reason it wouldn’t work) but there are no texture nodes in Cycles so…

I don’t believe texture nodes can be used with the displace modifier

Cant you just blend the 2 textures in Gimp or Photoshop first?

In Pshop or gimp, right.
We also have the compositor, just reminding it.
One thing to avoid though.
The use of the multires modifier + displace modifier. Though second on the list, you are able to apply displacement. Add another displ and use the other texture. Yeah, better avoid it. Try it anyway.
