How do i use gimp with blender 2.5, every time i try it encounters an error, do i need to set something up?

in any case, they are separate programs. What is stopping you from opening Blender’s output image in Gimp? if you didn’t save the image to a folder of your preference, it’s usually output to some temp folder…
One issue you may be having is you are working on a blend file that hasn’t been saved at all. Try saving the blend file to a directory and trying again.
