Blender 2.53 crashes on selecting object.

Hello all, I am using blender 2.53 to create a short animation as a school project. The project needs to be in asap, but whenever i open the blend, it crashes as soon as i select anything…

Wich OS?
Try to open the automatically generated last saved file (just rename it and tke off the number after .blend sufix).
You can also try to make a renamed copy of your original Blender file and try to open that one.
On OSX this happens mostly in two situations:

  1. Saturated Blender cache memory (or something similar): gets solved when restarting the computer.
  2. Over saturated Blend file… Just one more added thing was more than it could handdle (for some reason).
  3. Adding more RAM often blows that problem away…

Hope it helps

Oh, yeah, the old ‘dog ate my homework’ excuse huh?

If you’re still having the problem, you can try going to the File menu and using the Recover Auto Save feature.

This will open the file browser pointed to the temp folder that’s used by Blender. You should see a listing of lots of blend files with number-based names.

At the top, locate the button with the “calendar” icon. Clicking it will sort the files by date with the most recent files listed first. Try opening those files.

If you find what you’re looking for, be sure to save it to your project folder with a new name. Also, check the file for completeness as it might not have all of your latest changes (but that’s better than nothing).

This sounds similar to a problem I had a few weeks back with Text objects.
I eventually used gimp for the text, and havent tried to use blenders text object since.
Weather it is a text related problem or not, you can allways try appending the individual objects
into a fresh blend until you find the offending object. This should also help recover the majority of your work.

Submit a bug report with the offending file.

Ok i have narrowed down the problem, it is only when selecting a certain armature from a certain zoom level. If I zoom in close, I am usually able to select it and edit it. However if i zoom out a fair way and select it, it crashes. Seems to be caused by blender not knowing whether to select the armature or the mesh.
I have tried the autosave versions, they all have the same problem… I will just zoom in, delete it, then copy an identical armature and rename it. And hope this doesn’t happen again. Thank you for your help people.
Oh yeah, im on windows 7 ultimate, even though i prefer ubuntu 10.04
Im on windows because my laptop has switchable graphics, and ubuntu doesn’t recognize the more powerful graphics card, and just uses the rubbish integrated intel chip.
(and for the more knowledgeable linux users, I have tried to compile the vga switcheroo kernel, but all of the “switches” failed. I think this is because the kernel is made to switch toshibas or something, and i have a hp)
