Blender 2.55 locks up, 2.54 works Fine

I have a repeatable problem with 2.55.
I load a default scene, give it a cloud texture and set the influence to normal for a bump. Render.
Locks up every time after a render. I can close the render window and that’s it.
I’ve repeated the same steps using 2.54 and it works with no problems. I’ve had 2.55 lock up in a few other tests after first running, but thought it was a fluke.
This is 100% repeatable in 2.55 and never had 2.54 lock up like this.

Any ideas?

Works fine here… What OS are you using?, Video card??, RAM??

I’m using 2.55 Rev. 32933, on windows 7.

You might try downloading the latest builds available at graphicall.org. I’ve known of others having problems with the official release of 2.55. I even had a problem with zooming the 3d view with the mousewheel around the time of the 2.55 release, and I was using builds. The problem has cleared up since then, so definitely try graphicall.org for something more recent.

I can check graphicall.org, although 2.54 seems to do everything fine for now. I was just a bit confused that the blender release would have such a problem off the shelf. I’ll see if I have better luck with a newer build and report back.

I’m using win XP 32bit. Win7 has to many issues with other software compatibility for me. Maybe one day if I get a new laptop, but times are very hard for now.
I’m not having any major issues with 2.54, but I was hoping the video sequence editor preview was fixed in 2.55. Not yet it seems, so I’ll just keep checking.

OK, I just tried r32949. I get the exact same type of lockup. Again, 2.54 works fine. Something big must have changed.
I’ve got a an ATI radeon, so if this is the problem then I’m stuck with 2.54 and 2.49.

I have a similar problem when I “render to a new window”. blender locks up when I close the window or just shuts down when rendering to large resolutions. But if I “render to full screen” it doesn’t happen.

Sounds like a known bug related to separate windows in Blender. This is mentioned at the bottom of the release log page (known issues) http://www.blender.org/development/release-logs/blender-254-beta/

Notice it says “potential crashes”. It is a (seemingly) intermittent bug which causes much confusion about when and where it occurs. You may think it’s gone in older or newer releases but it is still in there, it just hasn’t shown itself to you yet.

It’s apparently a tough one to fix. It’s been around for months now. It used to show a looping error msg in console (image too small) when it locked up Blender, but after a “fix” a couple months ago it stopped showing anything.

I get around it by escaping (Esc key) out of the render window instead of closing it, or clicking back into main Blender window via the taskbar. I try not to close separate panel windows once I open them, and (of course) I save very often.

Thanks for the tip. It seems to be working now when using full screen, but it still hangs when using new render window.
I never had this hangup in 2.54, but it seems like I was just lucky. I’ve always set my defaults to render in a new window. I’m not sure why, just what I was used to. Using the full screen render to get around it is just fine by me.

Hmmm… but the bug is still there.

Do you want to help devs to track it? i can upload a series of selected windows XP 32 bit builds to try and track what revision has the problem to make the devs aware of it, but will require quite some patience on your part. (since 2.44 and 2.45 are many builds and i need to select and compile a few of them to start)
