Hi all!
I installed the latest Blender release (v 2.64a) on an older PC.
whenever I click on the materials button, blender crashes.
whenever I click on the world button, blender crashes.
whenever I render (cycles or BI), blender crashes.
whenever I click stuff too fast, blender crashes.
the PC’s specs are as follows:
OS --> Windows XP Home Edition SP2
RAM --> 2 GB
processor --> AMD Athlon XP 2500+ 2 Ghz
GPU --> Nvidia onboard GPU
Pretty old PC yes, but blender 2.63 works perfectly on it…
Any help will be highly appreciated.

did you try running different builds of 2.64, or running it from a folder on the desktop vs installing it? Or
running it from a flash drive?
If it still crashes, and you still want to use 2.64, suggest just getting a cheap new desktop PC , and using the old one for 2.63 and/or rendering…always good to have more than one computer (though wives usually don’t understand the logic)…model on one while rendering on the other.
I don’t know what prices are like in Pretoria, or your budget, but any new one will be much better than
your current one…even for $350 US. :yes:

Yeah, I know, Its a pretty stone age PC, but I only use it for rendering as you say,(I fix old PCs and use them for rendering. I currently have four old pcs that I can use for rendering, but I seldom do because I normally don’t have that much stuff to render)
I do modelling/animation etc. on a new computer anyway… so its not a ‘train smash’ if 2.64 doesn’t work on it. I was only worrying about compatibility in the long term if I can no longer run new versions of blender on old PCs.
I only used the installer from blender.org. haven’t tried the zip yet.
also I haven’t tried different builds… maybe I should do that. Anyway, thanx for the advice!
Try the latest version that correspond to your OS from the buildbot and see if it is still crashing for you : http://builder.blender.org/download/
There are hundred of bug fixed on the buildbot versions since that old “stable” 2.64a version, maybe some of them are related to what you experienced.
Though it’s odd that 2.63 works fine and 2.64a crashes for everything on that system.

Thanks man. Yeah very odd for me too that 2.64 suddenly doesn’t work. I’ll download the latest build soon as I can.

When I fix an old PC, its not long before the masses of kids find out and then they’re all here wanting to LAN Counter Strike or Age of Empires…
