Blender 2.78a takes ages to import models, reacts slow and freezes on import

I have installed latest windows updates including Nividia driver. Ever since I upgraded blender, windows and drivers (automatic update) blender 2.78a takes up to 20 minutes to open models in mainly .obj formats but also other formats like Collada etc. Opens start window but as soon as I am trying to import any model blender is "not responding" for ages. Once it managed to open the model after a long time, I can hardly work with it as it keeps freezing and stuttering, blinking etc. I tried just about anything from re-install, deleting blender foundation folders all the way to system restore and go back to to previous version with no results.

I have checked all hardware components all the way to BIOS and all seems to be good and working.

Any help is highly appreciated as I really like the program and doing a lot of work with it, but as it stands are absolutely unable to do anything with it whatsoever. As from startup all I am getting is straight out frustration.

Asus UX51VZA - Windows 10 64b
Blender Install Path: “C:\Program Files\Blender Foundation\Blender\blender.exe”
Intel Core I7 - 3612QM - Intel HD Graphics 4000
CPU 2.1GHZ - 4 cores - Driver version 10.18.10.4425
Nividia 650M - 8GB RAM - Driver version:376.33

Tnx very much in advance.

Is the interface running slow/laggy in general?
There were quite a few reports here concerning issues with Blender, nVidia Optimus notebooks and the latest drivers.

Discussed solutions:

  • Run Blender in the integrated graphics or
  • revert nVidia drivers back to 372.90.

you didnt actually use windows update for your graphics did you!? this could be a mess to clean up. first order of business is getting the latest intel driver and nvidia driver from the intel and nvidia sites. make sure to get the right models and os.

first you need to go into safe mode and uninstall the nvidia driver. then, back in normal windows uninstall all things nvidia, restarting as prompted.

go to the device manager, find your nvidia graphics. if it just says “Standard Graphics adapter” then you should be good, if not, then right click on the nvidia and select “Uninstall”. restart in safe mode.

in safe mode, uninstall the intel graphics driver from programs list. reboot.

install the INTEL FIRST, restart.
install the Nvidia, but select custom and only select the driver, audio driver(if present), and physx(optional). unless you NEED geforce experience, just proceed with a standard install.

lastly, disable automatic windows update for drivers and optional software.
