Great! With Houdini getting Socalis(sp?)/Hydra/USD later this year. All my exporting and importing problems should come to a close.

Will USD finally provide a good method for using Renderman with Blender?

I don’t know but for one thing iam sure, more and more big companys will use blender because of the USD support!!! Hopefully it will be ready for blender 2.82

Well. Export capability is a great first step. But in that form it really only opens Blender as a first step in a large studio pipeline. (Model something in blender, export USD and then do lighting, etc in Houdini or Katana)

Part of the whole advantage of USD is to be able to pull together pieces and compose them in interesting ways. Houdini 18 has built some nice tools around this. For example, it shows the USD hierarchy and where things are being composed from.

@sybren I know we talked about this on email, but I want to bring this up in this discussion as well. Importing a USD file as a reference and not loading the entire data would be a great second step to move Blender from the beginning of the pipeline to the middle at least. Some tools to be able to compose USD in a node graph like Houdini 18 would be killer but that might be a stretch.

BTW those referencing this making the viewport faster, you’re talking about Hydra, which is the viewport system with USD. Which is optional and afaik no plans for that.

this is huge !! finally it will be on blender 2.82

Can someone update the thread title to indicate 2.82 now officially having USD support?

It is important that people know that there’s no more need to just talk about it, but how the current implement can move forward before release.

I’ve updated the title!

Sweet. I’m going to test the hell out of it when I get a break working between this and Houdini.

Anyone knows how to enable this on linux? Can’t find that experimental checkbox for the life of me… I found in on windows the other day…

There’s no “Developer Extras” checkbox on linux? It should be in the Interface section…
