Blender 4.2.4. Rigify: Add a root bone?

Blender 4.2.4. In Rigify, is there a way to add a root “bone” to the rig?

The rig generated from the default metarig will get a root bone added.

If you want to take control and create your own, you can do.
Add the new bone, and parent any unparented bones to it - only the spine needs to be parented in the default metarig.

Once you’ve added the bone:

  • Switch to Pose Mode on the metarig.
  • Go to the Bone tab in the Properties window.
  • Set the Rig Type in the Rigify Type panel to basic.raw_copy.

The generated rig will give it the normal root control shape. But you have it available in the metarig if you want to add any other bones to it.

When I generate the Rigify rig, I do not see a root bone in the rig or root bone listed in the Outliner.

Was there an error message at the bottom of the screen when you hit the generate button? It doesn’t look like any of the controls have been created.

The errors don’t show up for very long, so watch the status bar area when you generate it.

This was the error

I see the root bone, now. Thank you

That can happen when you move the bones around. It wants the head and tail points for the bones along a chain to be in the exact same position. If one has moved away, even a little, it will give that error.

In Edit Mode, check the bones going in and out of spine.004. You can snap the points together. You can use Shift-S, Cursor to Selected, followed by Shift-S, Selection to Cursor, to put the bone endpoints at the same location.
