Blender 5.1.1 bricks my computer

It’s the second time now. When scultpting Blender starts running in powerpoint presentation mode. Not only that but even my pc starts doing the same. I’m not even doing crazy stuff. This never happened with the 4.something version I used some time ago.

Forgot to mention that it doesn’t happen as soon as I start working but after a good while. I has happened coincidentally right at the end of the working session. Besides, it makes really hard to close the software and shut the pc off.

Could you tell more about the situation?

It works really well on my computer. No lag at all. Never had any issues…

NoLag

:man_shrugging:

What does that mean? (It starts playing a video…?)

It works fine until it doesn’t. Maybe after an hour, an hour and a half session the problem manifests.

By “presentation mode”, I mean it start going reeeally slow, at the point you can see when the frame changes. Forgot to mention that it doesn’t happen as soon as I start working but after a good while.

There is no information to determine whether this is a hardware issue or a Blender issue.

(Sculpting requires a lot of memory and high hardware performance.)

Have you checked how many vertices you are using?

In what way are you proceeding with the sculpting?

Are you using Vulkan?

Vulkan is likely to consume more memory than OpenGL.

※ Try switching from Vulkan to OpenGL. Vulkan itself might be the problem.

OK, that’s interesting. But seriously… I failed to provoke you to share more info. Would you mind?

What are the PC specs, OS? What sort of sculpting do you do? Could you share a screenshot or something if it’s too much to write. I mean how dense are the meshes you sculpt? 50 000 000 polys will turn any PC into slide presentation. What sculpting features are you using? Dynotopo? Cloth brushes?.. What is the problem? Tell us about it.

Hardware issues will do that. Overheating would be at the top of my list. Are fans clogged with dust? It the PC overclocked? Does it crash sometimes as well or just turns off? Is it a PC at all? A laptop that you keep on your lap on a thick wool blanket?..

It’s a laptop yes, on which I used to to way more resouce-demanding things. The vent doesn’t even go crazy as to somewhat alert you that it’s using too much memory, heck even the task manager looked fine when I summoned it in between frames.

We cannot possibly help you if you don’t provide more details- hardware specs, drivers, OS, Blender version, SSD or HDD and ages, a stripped down Blender file

Well, you seem to have a problem. :man_shrugging: Good luck solving it.

This sounds like the same issue I’ve been having. My Blender was quite outdated, so I figured updating it would fix it, but nope. Same thing.

The only ‘fix’ I’ve been able to find is to restart your graphics drivers by pressing CTRL + SHIFT + WIN + B

It’s not a solution, but it does fix it until it does it again.

I’ll consider it, remember doing something like that time ago. For now I’ve disabled the latest plugin, so far no problems.

In this case, I think it’s a Windows system instability or GPU drive problem?
If there is a problem between the blende and the GPU drive, there are several symptoms.
Separately, it could be a blender UI error. Symptoms that are difficult to say are problematic should be looked for by removing the cause one by one.

From my own experience, my drivers are always kept up to date, and nothing else causes it. I play games etc… without issues. Only Blender does it, and for me, it’s completely random. Sometimes its sculpting, other times it’s just going into Edit Mode, or clicking a button—could be anything, really.

Thankfully, I’ve not been using Blender that much recently, and so until a couple of days ago when I was briefly using it, I’d all but forgotten about the issue. I feel like if it was a windows or driver issues, it would have gone by now, but… :person_shrugging:

Blender and GPU drivers are closely related.

Although I cannot explain it technically (I do not know the details), many problems are caused by GPU drivers.

Therefore, if you are experiencing issues, I recommend completely uninstalling and reinstalling the GPU driver.

You can also run Blender using the Command Prompt to check for abnormal symptoms.

The advantage of running Blender via the Command Prompt is that usage data remains even if Blender crashes unexpectedly.

Problems caused by Addons can be identified using this method. (However, it does not provide complete information.)

Another cause is issues related to the UI or themes.

※ Although this is a hypothesis, it appears that this problem occurs because settings from a previous (problematic) version are being reused.

To verify this issue, you can test by resetting Blender by moving the config folder of your current version, located at C:\Users\XX\AppData\Roaming\Blender Foundation, to another location.

※ Restoring the config folder will return you to the previous state.

Blender and GPU drivers are closely related. It is not easy to pinpoint the cause, as there could be various other issues as well.

(Since I am not an English speaker, some expressions may differ from my original intent. :slightly_smiling_face: )

I’ve disabled the last extension I added and it’s totally fine for now. I’m modelling terrain rn, just saying.
