blender and Sony Vegas software

Has anyone used Vegas with Blender? My problem is I don’t know the proper template to choose in Vegas. My animation is a PNG sequence, 1280x720 (widescreen format). I have tried several different settings on Vegas and each time my final video output is stretched too wide. I would like to burn the animation to a DVD but I am really stumped. Any Vegas users out there?

I’ve had no issues using Blender + Vegas.

The HD template (1920x1080) is what I normally use for HD stuff. All the HD dimensions should produce the same thing anyway. Just make sure you right click on the image sequence & change it’s aspect ration to 1.333 if you’re using 1440x1080 video. Make sure you’re rendering to a widescreen format too. The DVDA WS template should be good enough.

Do you not have a 720P template?

1280x720 isn’t DVD resolution? Do you mean just burn to DVD media or make a ‘DVD’?

If you want a widescreen DVD at DVD res then you’re 1280x720 is the right aspect ratio, you’ll need 1024x576 for widescreen DVD going from your 1:1 PAR .png source to DVD. A clean resize rather than crop and resize.

Maybe Vegas offers a widescreen DVD template. Don’t know Vegas.

You’ll also need to consider colourmetrics going from RGB to DVD (BT 601) and levels adjusted to 16 - 235 otherwise your playback will not look like your .png’s.

Vegas I’d assume with a DVD template would do both for you?

Vegas has a DVD template (several) but DVD’s are HD res. 1280x720 is HD. Blender has no NTSC SD/widescreen template either (why I’ll never know).

The color space isn’t an issue, DVD’s can do computer RGB ranges if the project is mpeg-2 is rendered like that. Modern HDTV’s & all non CRT-TV’s have no issues with RGB color.

The best bet to get the proper size for Vegas is to set your preview to best/full & then save a screenshot of the timeline. It should be @ 1.0 PAR & would give you an image with the correct size to render from blender with. Just make sure when you import in to Vegas you have that image sequence’s PAR @ 1.0, not the 0.9… WS one.

Sorry Mr. Friar but I’m still having trouble. Starting from the begining, what template should I select? I used HDV 720 (1280x720) at first. The image in the preview window looks as it should, it’s when I burn the DVD that things become stretched when viewed on my 16x9 TV set.

I guess my question is when I open Vegas, what settings should I select. Sorry for not catching on. I am using Vegas 9 by the way.

I’d suggest using the Vegas project template for what most of your footage is for. IE if you have HD footage, use one of those template (HDV should be 1440x800, that’s what I use). Then when you render use a DVD Architect template (DVD Architect NTSC Widescreen video stream). That is 720x480x29.97fps, which is what’s needed for NTSC (north america) DVD’s.

HDV is a slightly different aspect ratio vs SD footage but it’s so close that you’ll get small black bars on the left/right of the screen when you render out. But they’re only several pixels big.

OK, I think I’ve got it now. Thanks for the help!

I’d suggest going to Sony’s Vegas forums for lots of info. Lots of long time users there that have worked on a variety of stuff & know lots of little tidbits about mixing sources.

Also make sure in the project window that comes up when you “render as”, that the “Stretch video to fit output frame size. Do not letterbox” is unchecked. That way it will preserve the aspect ratio of your clips when you output to SD.
