Blender combs structure mesh

Hey there,
I want to try something new and have in fact no idea how to start. I also don’t know how to describe it correctly in a few words, so that I can find something on google. I hope to get some inspiration fitting tutorials over here. Thank you for anything.
Here is what I want to do:
I have a mesh of a character, with one material on it. I want to break in off on some points, like holes and fill these holes with a structure of combs like somehow in this picture:

I asked around and the only idea I came with, was to model all this. But the structure should have the accurate borders of my character mesh, so that’s difficult somehow.
I hope you understand what I’m thinking of and can bring me some ideas.

Basicly you mean triangulate then wireframe modifier?

wow thank you very much , I had no idea, that there was something cool like the wireframe modifier.
Now I only need to solve how to use the modifier only on specific parts and that I get a nice transition.

That’s easy said.
Select the vertices you need, assign them to a vertex group, then use the selection in the modifier:

See the group label?
Play with the factor to get the group out (1 = do not show)
That way you can take out just the parts you need.
