Blender crashed when rendering (video) animation

​Everything works perfectly, even rendering 50 PNG images at 300 samples with 2 instances of blender (one rendering with the GPU, the other with the CPU). However after adding the series of images to the video sequencer (using just one instance of blender now!), Blender closes as soon as I hit ‘Render Animation’ - there isn’t even a crash dialogue, the screen just vanishes.
I’ve tried different video formats and different encoders but nothing makes a difference. I’ve tried loading an older version of the .blender file to re-import the images, but I get the same problem. Any thoughts as to why this is happening? Thanks!

Windows 10 + Blender v2.77 (all drivers are up to date too)
