Blender crashes every 5-10 minutes when using background reference videos

I have 6 GBs of ram, it is not a problem. It crashes when I use sequences and videos.
This is infuriating, I need reference images and I can’t put up with the crashing any more.

Well? This seems like a pretty damned stupid thing to render an otherwise great program inoperative.

I don’t know why blender is crashing, but if you download the latest version of blender you could try using empty images as background images. BlenderCookie has a tutorial on doing that here:http://www.blendercookie.com/2011/06/28/tip-using-empties-with-image-display-mode/
