I have a x64 windows 7 machine with a recent x64 build of Blender from graphicall. I want to try the tomato camera tracking feature out with a .mov file from my iphone but every time I try and load the .mov file it crashes Blender with a “Blender has stopped responding” error.
If I use the same build of Blender and the same .mov file on my x64 windows 7 machine at work it loads the file fine.
I’ve tried numerous x64 builds from graphicall but they all crash when I try and load the .mov file in. I have however managed to load it into a x32 build of Blender though.
Any ideas how I can get a x64 build of Blender working with .mov files on my home computer?
Quicktime has officially been abandoned in Blender. You should consider other formats for future video processing. Or just use one of the x32 builds that still supports it.
Why does the same Blender build work with quicktime files on another windows 7 computer though?
I did notice on graphicall on the build that I downloaded that next to Quicktime support it said No. I just figured that it meant I couldn’t save out .mov files as they were loading in just fine on my work computer.
So there must be something else I need to fix on my home computer to be able to load in mov files, just not sure where to start.
I just downloaded the latest version of Quicktime on my home computer (the one that doesn’t work) the other day. But yes this could be one area where the version’s don’t match. Both are running x64 windows 7, both have the same build of Blender, just need to sync the version of Quicktime if they aren’t already.
If Windows, Blender and Quicktime are all the same version do you have any other ideas how I can troubleshoot Blender crashing on loading .mov files?
I’ve just upgrade the working computer to quicktime Version 7.7.1 (1680.42) to match the computer that’s not working and it’s still crashing. In terms of Windows, Blender and Quicktime they are now identical.
Is there some other part of the system where I should look that might be crashing Blender when it comes to loading in movie files?
Quicktime was known to have a bug with certain nVidia drivers. This is why we never upgrade our quicktime. Once you have a version that works never upgrade.
One thing you are not listing is the video card in each computer. Are they the same?
Ah never even considered my gfx card. The computer that works has a ATI Firepro V3750, while the one that doesn’t has an Nvidia card (a Geforce GTX 460, I think, will confirm later).
So you think Blender crashing could be down to the nVidia drivers? I’ll see if there’s an update when I get home.
Looks I’m running the latest version of the nVidia drivers.
I didn’t know Blender had problems with nvidia cards, do you think this is why I can’t use quicktime files? Is there anything I can do to get Blender working with nvidia?
It is not really a problem with Blender. It is a problem with Quicktime and or nVidia. I just upgraded to a GTX460 myself and only yesterday I noticed that After Effects does not even recognize the card as an OpenGL device anymore. The previous card, my 9800 was recognized fine. So the quality of nVidia drivers has always been suspect for quite sometime. If they work with the hot new games they are considered valid or “fixed”.
There are 3rd party drivers you can investigate. It just depends upon how comfortable you are with turning your main display device over to someone who hacked something together. www.laptopvideo2go.com has drivers.
Also, are you using a Cycles build? If so, try a non-cycles build. I get crashes on OSX with Cycles builds on certain computers mainly nVidia GT120.
Not to happy about trying third party drivers, like to play games on this system so wouldn’t want to affect them.
Surely Blender\Quicktime should work with nvidia cards? All my recent Blender builds have been cycle builds so i’ll try and find one that doesn’t use cycles if you think it might make a difference.
