Hello, My name is Bobby im new to blender and just wondering why its automatically closing on me when I go to [file] then click [user preferences] it will shut blender down…?

Try updating your graphics card drivers
Make sure you are using the latest version of blender from blender.org
If you want to get to user preferences you can always change the 3d view window to a user preferences window from the drop down list in the bottom left corner of the window
