My 3D experience is very limited only really starting a few months back with Gmax and creating content for X3 Albion Prelude which I enjoy doing although Gmax is very limited.
As Blender was free I decided to download and play around with it using some of the tutorials out there, unfortunately I am having problems rendering anything.
I created a simple animation using a make human character walking along a corridor made using the the Block Wall add on, I was basically testing how to use a rig, the animation was only 200 frames long. The render is in Cycles.
Unfortunately it took me 5 hours just to render 40 frames at 100 samples.
I know my PC isnt the best but I was hoping it would be a little faster than this, is the render time down to my PC or because I am new to Blender am I missing a few tricks?

You don’t indicate what processor you are using.
The render times depend on may factors, without anyone seeing your .blend file we can’t give you specific advice on reducing render times.
Materials / textures / poly count, lighting all affect render time.
For support questions you should ALWAYS supply a .blend file for ereview
yea i got a bunch of tricks for you. First theres the CPU mode or GPU mode. GPU usually fastest. 2. in the render options, try direct lighting, see if its good enough for you, if not go upto limited GI.
3. check all your geometry, try editing each object and using W remove doubles.( the less triangles in your scene the faster render).
4.volumetric shaders or sub surface scattering slow down the render.
5. you can try using a Denoiser plugin/node group that removes the render noise, meaning you need less samples to get the same result,( download B super zero Wide node pack for this, and append the specific nodegroup from it (Path combine denoiser i think its called, you will have to research how to use it but its quite easy)
6. at the bottom of the render settings, turn up the tile size to 256x256 if you are using GPU render for a much faster render, experiment with other tile sizes if you want.
7. if you are doing any compositing, put the settings at 256x256 openCL.
8. try turning down the shutter time for motion blur or turning it off, it will clean up your image and the end result might be fine.
9. there’s probably more ways to speed it up.
i used to play X3 Reunion, epic game but i gave up when my big corvette exploded on impact with a trading station during a routine docking, and i had no salvage insurance or save game because i turned it off get rid of the annoying auto save pause. lol.
