Blender edit mode selected vs unselected colors

so im trying out 4.4 coming from 3.6, and i just have to ask, who thought changing the edit mode colours to be less readable was a good thing? am i missing something?

(and i know i can change it, i just wanna know the rationale for why anyone thought this was an improvement?)

blender 3.6 for comparison:

That seems like an apples to oranges comparison

Basic problem is, we dont know what your settings are, mine doesnt look like that, also the blender default theme does not. Maybe you should check it theres an update for the theme you use.

I’m not sure how. It’s the exact same thing. Edit mode with edge selection. It used to be black and white, now it is light yellow and white. The camera angle doesn’t change that?

Also this is the default theme on my machine. I haven’t customized anything.

Does edge select look different for anyone else?

3.6 on the left, 4.4 on the right:

do you see how I used the same mesh, with the same selection state, at the same angle to do a comparison? Can you see how that might be a more exact comparison than what you did, with 2 different objects, selected entirely differently, at different angles?

These are factory settings on both, so if that’s not what you’re seeing, your default is broken.

It is yellow and white if you have all the edges selected, the white one is the active edge. I agree that it is a bit too similar to the other selected ones, when it was orange and white ( like SterlingRoth’s 3.6 example there was more contrast.

If you deselect all the edges and only select one it should be black and white.

You can change the yellow in preferences Themes - 3dviewprt - edge mode selection.

As for your first screenshot (light green), maybe Freestyle Edge Mask? (you can also change that in preferences. or if you marked them by mistake, edge menu, “clear freestyle edge”)

I think there is a misunderstanding.

Mine are the exact same objects, each with only one edge selected. The only difference is the camera angle, but the unselected edges would still be light yellow in 4.x if I tumble the viewport.

I guess I must have some sort of issue since it looks different than yours. I’m just confused since i don’t spend much time in 4.x historically, and certainly haven’t ever edited any themes.

edit, for clarity here is the exact same camera angle in 4.4 in case you thought i was being tricky?? exactly one edge is selected. all the pale yellow/green edges are completely unselected. and this is just a default plane subdivided twice. there’s no edge sharpening or anything.

this appears to be the problematic setting.

in 3.6 and i also checked my old copy of 4.1, this is set to black. i suppose this is likely a bug, but a strange one as i’ve never edited this value?

edit:

ok i’ve poked around, and this issue starts with blender 4.2 on my machine. trashing the preferences folder is the fix.

the only thing i can think of is that starting with, 4.2 perhaps i had ran a beta where the devs were mucking with selection colours and that persisted from there on, since i always say “import settings from previous” with each new version?
