Blender/gimp etc ported to IOS! -sort of-

How to run blender on an iPad/iThing locally - no vnc or Internet needed!

Requirements:
A jail broken iThing with 4gB of free space
An Internet connection good enough to download 3.6gB of files.
Wifi (in order to ssh)
patience
Luck

Issues:
No hotkeys that involve two keys at once
No saving

Step one:
Add these repos to cydia:

Step two:
Download these files

On ithing: (from cydia)

  • Bochs for iPhone if you have an iPhone or bochs for iPad if you have an iPad
  • Windows 95 for bochs
  • iFile (this is shareware although cracked versions are available)
  • Openssh

On pc

  • Artist x Linux .iso file
  • Winscp

Step 3:
Start bochs and check windows 95 works on iThing, if it does not, this will probably not work on your iThing.

Step 4:
Ssh into your iPhone/iThing

Step 5:
Add a folder in the same directory as the win95 folder (in documents) called whatever you want, e.g. Linux or blendlinux

Step 6:
Transfer the artistx Linux .iso over into your blinux (blenderlinux as I like to call it) folder.

Step 7:
This is the tricky bit, you have to duplicate and modify the os.ini file from the windows 95 folder into your blinux folder and edit it. Someone has made a nice tutorial for this on YouTube, although it only half worked for me.

Step 8:
Start Bochs

Step 9:
Select your blinux folder and log in.

Step 10:
You have blender on your iThing!

Anyone tried this?

Why would you ?

dunno, it just seemed appealing to have a copy of blender running on my ipad…

Which you state will be:

Veeerrrrryyy slow
No hotkeys that involve two keys at once
Sounds like a recipe that will end with the ipad being thrown across the room in frustration. Result, a very expensive broken electronic gadget. Think I’ll pass.

Aww Richard… I laughed out loud at your first response!

Surely ipad/android and blender would be better off with enhancing and adding value rather than genuinely running blender…

That camera toy for maya allowing an ipad to be used as a real camera in your virtual set for example…

pro tools has a mixing desk app taking advantage of the ipad as a control surface…

all actually usable enhancements! much better than an overambitious but ultimately useless feature!

Very true, my internet has just reset now so am currently downloading the files, maybe it might be a bit faster than I originally hoped… Fingers crossed…

have tried recently and worked fine on iPad 2**

I salute you sir. For doing it not because any sensible person would want to do so, but just because you can do it at all.

You also have gimp and about 200 other programs but haven’t tried them yet…
