Hi all, I’ve made up a flyer to be given to computer science/math/physics professors or posted on campuses. Ton will twitter/blog/facebook it later - the text is approved, but we will be doing a banner and a few other things before we announce it for folks to post it everywhere. Anyone is welcome to do a better layout if they like, just post a link to this thread. http://www.qfpost.com/download.do?get=607f5772044ef2df787df747dcae11e2
Hi LetterRip, a very quick mess of mine using your text.
It’s an A4 300 dpi RGB .pdf you can easily print in high resolution or convert in A3 150 dpi, still having good resolution.
If you like to use it and want something changed, let me know
Hi,
I appreciate the effort, to me though the weird text is distracting and difficult to read even at larger than actual size. Also these will probably be printed on peoples personal printers or mass copied by CS professors, hence the image can’t fit to the sides of the page, also this seems like it will be a dollar a page with that much color background.
I’d probably want the key ideas to stick out more than the description of the ideas.
Having all text centered (as you have it) might be better than having it justified (as I had it), just not sure.
eh hee… you’re right
I’ll see what I can do to iron those aspects out
As for now I think I’ll delete the actual version from my site to free space
here’s my much more toned down proposal http://digitalaphasia.com/images/google2.jpg

I’m no copy-writer but maybe the use of the word ‘cool’ is a little on the heavy side.
Zeffii, i like it. I’d probably justify the text though. I do like the indentation for the ideas and usage at the top of blender and google logo (but not sure if we can use google logo?). Good point on ‘cool’ will swap in an amazing or other superlative.
yeah, maybe using the google logo is a little cheeky, but it doesn’t do google any harm and they are the sponsor after-all. The alternative is their 2011 summer of code Logo, which is weighty on the ink and may not have the same appeal in print on bw or toner-photocopy. I completely didn’t pick at line length yet, that’s the text pasted straight from the PDF so there are indeed some sloppy carriage returns, my bad. soon fixed.
I asked - the google trademark folks might be unhappy with us, so it was suggested we use the gsoc logo
http://code.google.com/p/google-summer-of-code/wiki/GsocLogos
I feel the same way about the gsoc logo… hmmm what if it were inverted…
Inverted and desaturated doesn’t look too bad.
if it’s for blender, you want it to be aesthetically pleasing.
if i wanted to take part in something for design and animation software, i would want it to look professional, like shilaM’s.
i know it might be heavey on ink, but maybe you could achieve the same style with a white bg?
ill try to knock something up so youll know what i mean…
Earlier i read that GSOC welcome user driven GSOC logos.
Shilams looks superb, but it looks more like a surf holiday than a code job. It is difficult to read, center justified text / symmetrical text is not suited to the information that we are trying to convey. To do blender development justice even the poster should be able to quickly make very clear to the reader that it is
- a job which will look great on a CV
- the people mentoring take their job serious and so should the applicant.
- smooth communication between both parties will benefit both.
I did another revision of the poster http://digitalaphasia.com/images/google4_large_justified.jpg but i do not like the way the justified text in the first paragraph stretches, slows down the reading, compared to unjustified. Flush left can give it a more breezy perception. (just like blender gui doesn’t attempt to cram everything into a small area anymore. let stuff breath a little. )
upon swiftly reading http://www.google.com/permissions/guidelines.html and http://www.google.com/permissions/index.html#ads and http://www.google.com/permissions/index.html#sponsor come down to :
Sponsorships
We typically do not approve the use of our logo for events we sponsor. Work with your Google contact to obtain permission for an exception to this policy. We have a separate policy for Google Grants recipients.
it would be a simple question, maybe i didnt dig enough in the GSOC FAQ.
We can certainly work around the fact that the GSOC logo is most anomalous - if the google rep shuts down the idea.
the gsoc logo can is CC licensed, an invert of the black white, but leaving the blue looks ok as well.
this is clear ( from letterRips earlier link : http://code.google.com/p/google-summer-of-code/wiki/GsocLogos )
" (…)you are welcome to do what you’d like with the logo provided you do not change it beyond resizing it. You are, for example, welcome to put it up on your website or use it on a flyer advertising your organization’s participation in the program. "
" Community contributed presentations or other artwork are welcome and appreciated. If you make something cool, let us know and we will link to it from this wiki. "
seems to suggest that they prefer completely novel designs for the logo over the official GSOC being manipulated beyond resize.
hrrmm dang.
Ok, another attempting with white background, blender logo on top, more easily readable fonts… I hope is less surf party now
This is a lower resolution version, but I’ll upload the higher one in case you like it.
Feel free to critic like killers…
Shilam, first off i like the placement of the blender logo bottom right!
But as a cohesive piece it can be improved, there are too many elements competing for attention.

The coffee stains, maybe it’s a personal thing but I perceive them as distracting. (like the 2009 version of lensflare, if the purpose is unclear question why you have it. I’ve seen a lot of this staining in sketchbooks by fellow college students, it can indeed create extra depth to an illustration. But the subject of this poster is text/information, information is transfered when the eye can focus. )

The bulletin points (Game Engine…etc ) have symmetry around the center line with inverse justification of the accompanying text on each side. This comes back to bite when you end up with a layout that is tedious for fast reading. Desiring to have symmetry tends to depreciate the content of the text and instead the main focus of the poster becomes the personal expression of the designer.
There are more things but they follow directly from your layout. ( lower contrast between letters in those places where the background is competing (Stain, logo). Have you looked at this in black and white yet? Am i cruel person?
maybe if you just made the logo a bit washed out?
Hey I like the new one quite a bit. I’m not too worried about the distraction from the text of the design since all of the stuff that they really need to see is in the blue text. The logo could definitely be reduced in intensity a bit, but is a minor concern. I did a desaturated version of the flyer and it still looked ok and was readable.
