Blender Guru Competition: Sci Fi

I couldn’t resist entering this one…Ive entered a few before, but im hoping to produce something a little more detailed etc…Here is the basic part of the scene set out. Just testing the mood of the image atm, and have done the basic modelling…The scene itself is actually a viewing platform on a large ship, inspired by an image I saw online

As you can see there isn’t much there atm, but im going to edit the background a little…i don’t really like the huge amount of stars etc…so may remove them. I might model the earth, but for the size etc…I think a background image would be fine!

Looking good  Can’t wait to see your progress! Good Luck

Thanks  Here is some progress!

EDIT…Forgot to add the texture to walls

Final piece of progress for tonight! started adding the hologram panels on the left and right hand side of the window.

once i get more done, ill start uploading some bigger images so that you can see the panels clearly and whats on them

Anytime I see a giant window in space with view of the Earth, I instantly think of Doctor Who (1st episode of 9th Doctor) It looks really good! Can’t wait until the finished product!

I hope you are going to replace all the textures you have used.
The textures are obviously are not your work. If you want to take the rules literally, the model of the planet and the model of the of the android that the textures are based on is not yours.
You probably don’t have the rights to use them. Screenshotting a news broadcast does not give you the right to use it in your work.
Also, the texture of the world makes up a good majority of the scene. This also breaks one of the rules.

There are some great tutorials on how to do a planet scene and you have over a month to make renders for the monitors. There is no reason to stick with these textures.

I have made an earth before…and it came out great…but at the moment, im considering the size of the model compared to that of the scene…its gonna have to be huge in comparison…but if it breaks a rule, then ill look into it! With textures…Im pretty sure im not the only person who doesnt make all of my own textures, it would be silly to, when there are so many great resources out there.

Also the texture for the ceiling, and walls I do have permission to use, I simply have to credit the original user, which I have forgotten to do…so; Thanks to svenniemannie (http://svenniemannie.deviantart.com/art/Spaceship-Texture-91959740) for that awesome texture!! I don’t see the problem with using textures already available…im not a crazy photoshop texturererer person.

EDIT: Also, I do have PSD’s available of all of the screens you see…the graphical part of that CNN news broadcast I made myself! also graphical elements on the others too…

Ive finished the hologram type panels on the left…the ones on the right will be different, but its actually quite difficult to think of things to put there. Also, ive tweeted Andrew about the legality of the background image…the rules do so that background images are ok, and technically speaking, thats what that is…but if it is illegal, ill try and simulate it!

I’m not sure if the iRobot picture was your design but I don’t know if it’ll be allowed have you checked that too?

well a friend said that its from some anti virus thing, so will probably check that…but i put the image together etc…i didn’t just type into google “futuristic apple posters”…but if the robot element of that image is a problem, then ill change it

do i also need copyright from god for the pictures of the globe?? :stuck_out_tongue: (joke)

looks good so far reminds me alot of this

Then I must be doing a good job, as that’s my reference image!

Here is a render with my own earth…still only a plane, but a plane with an image I rendered…I have a .blend for proof :stuck_out_tongue:

I think its turning out great. I love futuristic/space works.

looks really good… i dont think anyone will mind, but i think using IRobot is risky. Not only is IRobot a movie, but its also a automated vacuum company with absolutely no correlation to apple in any way. Like i said, i dont think you have anything to really worry about, but its just bad practice.

still, good work.

^^ Thanks  Anyone want to suggest some stuff for the 2 hologram panels on the right? I thought about doing the world stock markets etc…but not sure…Thanks for all the comments so far!!

EDIT: thanks @ThorntonStrolia…i never knew there was a company called iRobot…good to know

yup. and i like the idea of the stock market also

Right, so ive got the scene rendered now, 2 render layers, with the earth on one rendering out as an actual physical object in the scene (no more emission planes)…But one is BI and one is Cycles…and im having a real hard time combining the 2 together…ive done some compositing to the earth render layer, and can’t use a z combine after the compositing, and neither alpha over or mix node work (mix node just places it transparently) If i put the z combine before the compositing, it adds the layers together properly, but then applies the compositing to everything and no longer the single layer  Any ideas? Ill upload a screen shot of the compositing if that helps…hmm, I’ll just upload a screen now

atm, the first render layer (cycles) isn’t connected to anything…so yeah, basically I want to combine them AFTER the compositing on render layer 2 (BI)

NOOOOOOOB!! Solved it…realised i didnt even have an alpha channel in the scene :frowning:

Here it is now with the 2 layers combined…and the earth an actual model now

Another update…started the panels on the right…just a little bit more to add and then im done with that for now
