Blender handbook

I’ve learned blender pretty we’ll would you recommend handbook to me. Also do you know when the new handbook is going to be released.:eyebrowlift2:

We’re hoping the new book hits the presses in early March. After that, I’m not sure how long it’ll take to get into everyone’s hands, but it should really only be a matter of weeks.

Are you referring to the new book by the Blender Foundation, or bugman2000s book?:confused:

buy the current book if you can, then buy the new book when it comes out. This is how blender is funded so it will never be a waste of money. I already own 2 blender manuals, but I will buy the new one when it arrives :smiley:

See I would buy both but I’m low on money and so far I know a lot about Blender but I will be sure to buy the newest book so that I can get better(my .blends are mediocore).

Oh and you know the people that make those pictures that are so good we’ll how did they learn to do that is the book product of this or is it all web tutorials?

The book takes about 10-15% of its content from existing Foundation materials, but the rest is all new.

I think that what a lot of people miss when trying to become “great” is that although they’ve learned a lot, their knowledge can tend to be narrow. The new book is an attempt to give everyone who’s willing to try a rock solid foundation of skills and knowledge to build on. You can build mighty fortresses on good bedrock.

Roland, I want a copy signed by you when the book will be released.

Yeah man at least post it on the forum when the book is realeased OK I want it to learn more about blender.

I don’t know anything about how this point naming system works under blender, but I believe that should have been the case already, the amount of features, and changes to the general guts of blender I would have thought that we would be moving up higher, but especially the next feature is going to have the UI redesigned ( as is my understanding) it wouldn’t want to be 2.44, changes like that are too big.

But on that point, with the UI upgrade, will that have an impact on this book? Or will the UI remain pretty much as is, just with ability to rename keyboard short cuts? And if I have totally misunderstood, please correct me:)

I have no idea what Ton has in mind, but I’m taking a guess and assuming that the most drastic interface changes will be under the hood and will allow greater customizability and flexibility in the future. I think the basic principles of the Blender interface have been quite extensively thought out and will probably be adhered to, and it has always been a priority not to throw advanced users for too drastic a loop, so there shouldn’t be a lot that needs re-learning. Maybe some of Matt Ebb’s interface work will be incorporated as well.

Actually, like with most software, learning resources don’t go obsolete that fast, really. A newbie could still stand to learn a lot from the 2.3 guide, even now. There’s never a single silver bullet… you’ll want to supplement any book with support from this forum, etc., particularly if you want to be working with advanced features. But if you’re working with those features, then you should already know things like that subsurf us a modifier now, etc.

I was wondering if those Elephants Dream DVDs include some kind of tutorials, like how every scene was made, in detail. If not, it’s a pity. It would been the ultimate Blender learning experience. The Blender Foundation would have earned more revenues. I mean how many Blenderheads could do any one of those spectacular scenes. Probably none to this day.

Nothing quite like this is available, but I devote a chapter in my own book (see my sig for details) to some of what I thought were the most interesting techniques they used in that film, and also give some hints about how to go about studying those files.

I didn’t have anything to do with making that movie myself, but several people who were involved acted as technical editors for the book, including Bassam Kurdali (the director of ED) and Harkyman here…

Still not released yet…arrrggghhh…cmon Amazon. I did visit Perlin’s site though - fascinating. Does your book discuss his techniques and how to implement in Blender? His facial animation applet would be cool to see as a Blender GE.

No, I’m afraid not. That’s all stuff I’ve come across more recently and just posted there because I thought it might be of interest.

bugman_2000, I’ll definitely buy your book, together with the also forthcoming Blender Handbook. I definitely would stick to the current version and the 2.43 for a looong time. I’ll get serious with Blender this time. Given the right learning materials, I think I can do it.

I suggest that you come up with a blog dedicated to your book. You might want to add something you might have missed putting in the book, for instance. Or come up with downloadable pdf files as supplements.

I just hope that the ED creators would start writing a book how they did it in great detail. I’m sure it would be a bestseller.

I’m guessing also with bugman_2000 about the interface upgrade. It’s mostly under the hood. There are some thing, though, like display of selected bones in edit panels and the entire mesh editing buttons configuration that will mostly likely get a much-needed overhaul. bugman_2000 is also correct in that these changes do not invalidate previous learning material.

In the case of books, each book comes with a CD with the version of Blender on it that was used with the book. Want things to match exactly? Use the version on the CD. Don’t care so much? Use the latest.

Harkyman, will there be any tutorials in the handbook about the GE?

I’m really impressed at what it can do even without OGRE implementation.
