Blender Import/Export

Had various problems (laptop/external drive/all backups stolen) and gradually re-installing stuff.
Not yet reinstalled Blender, so…
Can I import a .dfx… or is it dxf…? An AutoCAD file anyway, can I import it into blender (seem to remember Iseeing that, but just checking) and then export the model as an .obj file?

Pretty sure blender handles .obj okay, most 3D progs do.

Will be re-installing Blender over the weekend…

It comes with 20-ish import and 25-ish export scripts, including OBJ (marked Wavefront) in both directions; and apparently it supports DXF in both directions natively – there’s even a hotkey for DXF-out . . .

obj works the best for me in most of cases …

Thanks for the replies, I’ve now got blender installed. But it always baffles me. Okay, so now I need a more precise answer, if anyone knows how - can someone please explain to me - exactly - how to a) import a dxf (or dfx) mesh into blender… and then
b) how - exactly - to export that mesh into an .obj file - please?

It’s desperately important that I manage to accomplish this task, this weekend - or I’ll go nuts, so for the sake of my sanity, guys and gals, please please help me?

File >> Open, navigate to the folder where your DXF is saved and click it with MiddleMouseButton.

File >> Export >> Wavefront(obj)

Thanks very much. Done that.

I was just wondering…

I’ve managed to get the model into Wings (My normal means of modelling although I am trying to learn Blender more) but once in there, there’s somthing odd about it…

Wings keeps freezing, and I see that all the faces are suddenly triangulated - is there some method I can use to clean the model up in Blender?

It also arrives in Wings with the hole material plonked onto some of the faces - since wings is freezing on me - I can’t do anything about it in there.

Is there something - or some thingS - I can do in Blender to simplify this model?

I’d probably need to follow some sort of tutorial as my familiarity with blender is… frankly abysmal.

It took me half an hour to remember - or find out - how to delete the dratted cube that turned up with the dxf file I imported to get this thing into blender!

Please be gentle with me…?
